Extension Tubes for Canon Lens

I'm just becoming interested in macro photography. I have a new Canon EF 24-70mm 1:4L lens. Can I use it as a macro lens if I use a extension tube. I have never used extensions tubes either. As you can see I'm really at the beginning.

I also I just attached the extension tubes and Lens and got the message that No Lens was attached what do I do?

You can use the Canon (version II-current model) 12mm or 25mm extension tube with your 24-70 and with most other Canon lenses....see the Canon website for a complete list. There are cheaper extension tubes out there but the 2 Canon models have 8 electrical contacts so the camera will operate normally with their tubes being used.

What do I use for Nikon D5300 and I have the Fotodiox extension tube and like I said when I use them with my lens I get the message that No Lens is attached to the Camera

Extension tubes were actually designed to be used with purpose-built macro lenses, but can be used with standard and zoom lenses as well, but will less than stellar results.
