I have an opportunity to purchase a very good used Canon Eos 1d Marklll, 10 megapixels. Price--$999

This would be a back up for my Canon 60D. It would also be replacing my well used Canon 20D. Any thoughts or opinions would be welcome.

Unless you really need the weatherproofing, I would consider that a step backward.

Ed, that's pretty old tech for $1k.
Now if you have an actual use for the pro features, like shooting in the rain or the really fast frame rate. My personal opinion, is that its not enough pixels for nature. It would be best for a sports camera.
You don't give any clues for its uses.
But even Canon will advise a 5dlll over a 1dmklV.
If your looking for a bigger sensor, sell all you cameras and get a 5dll. It's better than everything you currently have.
All just my personal opinion.
I'll bet the seller would be ecstatic to get a G for it and get rid of it.
That's what happens when you keep a back-up. I'll bet they never used it as a b-up?!
Good luck. ;-)

Thanks to all those who have responded to my post. I have taken your advice and I am no longer considering this purchase.

Once again, thank you.

I know people that still use that camera to this date. It's a fine camera, just has fewer megapixels. It shoots at 10fps. Superfast!

Thank you. But I think I will move on. I got a few good responses. Most think it would be a step backwards. No longer looking at it.

Ed, jeepdaddy does raise a good point.
Weatherproofing and 10 fps are not to be sneezed at.
If you only want to show on screen or print at 8x12 then this may be a very good option. (even aside from what the rest of us have said).
If it turned out that you photographed a lot of dusty rodeos or something similar, then this would be a perfect cheap option.
Only you know what you will use it for, if it is the right tool for the job and the recent options are thousands more, do not let our negativity dissuade you.

For $1k, get the 70D and keep the 60D for a backup. Just out of curiosity, how "critical" are your photo sessions that you need a backup?

It's one thing to "still use that camera" and "spend $1k to start using the camera".

To be very blunt, though, I think if the financial and photographic conditions are the same for someone in 2007 and today, using the 1D Mark III today indicates a bad decision at one end or the other.

I'm not sure if it is as clear as that.

I suppose my main question would be - how does the weather sealing on them compare.
I would expect it to be better on the 1D mark iii but its not an area I know much about.

Interesting, it has better performance than I would expect from a camera which is selling for 20% of its original price.

Consider that it requires a full frame lens but never uses the full frame. It was a solution for a limitation that no longer exists. If it where such a great idea why is it (I believe) the only one of it's type. One of natures mistakes.
You'll be glad to not have bought it.

Good points Lighthouse. I understand exactly what you are saying, thank you, and all of the other's suggestions. I was surprised that no one mention; pro or con about the APS-H sensor. Which is in between the APC-S & the full frame sensors. The FF is out of my budget right now excluding the 6d.

None of the comments or suggestions were ever taken negatively. I use all information to help me form a positive decision on my part. That's why I usually thank everyone who gives suggestions or their opinions.
