I would like to take some sunset pictures.
Any tips or sites that would give me some hints. I am sure you will be able to help me.

What gear will you be using?

If you are shooting mostly or directly into the sunset very likely you will want to under expouse by 1/2 to 2 by your meter. Some may use a neutral density filter in lieu of. If you do not the sun may well be washed out and the range of colors you see wil not get recorded as your light meter very likely will attempt to average.

The thread here is correct. Underexposure (simply by changing your exposure compensation dial) is key to getting great sunset (or sunrise) images.

REMEMBER TO REMOVE THE EXPOSURE COMPENSATION after finishing with the artful sunsets. Otherwise, your other pictures will be underexposed!!

Another thing to think of when you are shooting a sunset is to consider the foreground objects which can create a setting and a mood. A little patience and planning can make for a good and memorable effect.

Although the underexposure used did not make a good product shot of the fishing boat, the image below is not about the boat, but about a triumphant return to a fishing lodge after a monster battle with a fish. Coming in so late almost never happens at this particular location, which, geographically, makes viewing the sunset impossible. Thus, for the owners of the lodge, the image was iconic.

I have a Canon T1I with the kit lens 18-55. Also the 55-250mm lens.

I don't know why it worked, or how I even discovered this, but with my P&S cameras I would aim at the sky about 30 degrees above the horizon, press the shutter down half way, bring the camera down for the shot. The colors were much closer to the actual sunset.
I'm developing some idea of why this happens from following this forum, but I'm sure someone might be able to explain what I did.
Haven't had a chance to try that with my DSLR! Yet.

I Googled "sunny 16, sunsets". On the first page there were a couple of sites that mention some guilelines for sunsets. These may be some good starting points and try different settings from there.
Hope this is helpful!

Thanks for posting this image. I love photos that tell a story. It is not always about proper exposures. A photo must convey something other than apertures, shutters, white balance, blah! blah! blah!

Which coast? Where in Florida? I like in Boca Raton and know most of the east coast locations.

I don't know about Iowa, but in FL, the sun sets in the west. If you can be on the west coast during sunset, you can get the Gulf in your shots.

Go to http://photoephemeris.com/ and you can download a free program that will give you info on sunrise/sunset, twilight times. Very useful. You can get some beautiful shots within an hour before sunrise and an hour after sunset.
