Hello
I have a new SX50 and I would like to know if anyone could suggest settings that would allow me to take a Picture of the stars on a camping trip next weekend .
Not even sure that it would be possible but I would like to try.
And No a 6D setup is not a doable setting  (I knew what you were thinking )

Tripod. Widest focal length. Wide open aperture. Manual setting. Iso 800 or lower exposure time a few seconds. 2-4 second timer after pushing the shutter. Oh yeah...point it at the sky.

You can take really good night/star photos from a tripod and up to 30 sec exposures with minim star trailing. 800 ISO is probably OK, I'm not familiar with that camera, but "film" is cheap, so you can try lots of different settings and see what works best. But....mainly....20-30 sec exposures from a tripod will work great.

Page 150 of user guide: with shutter speeds of 1.5 seconds and slower, ISO will be 80 and cannot be changed.

Also, I think you'll find that 15 seconds is the longest the shutter will stay open.
