Seems like a harsh sentence but what she did was absolutely stupid and fraught with peril.
I have seen this on the news. All I can say is the a life sentence is too extreme.
This woman had no malice in her heart or mind so prison would be completely inappropriate for her under these circumstances. I think an appropriate task for her should be edifying others on how to avoid such tragedies. Yes what she did was stupid but only in retrospect. If the accident hadn't happened all that would have remained would be her deed of helping some ducklings.
If you stopped because there was a person lying in the road, and someone slammed into you with their motorcycle, it would be the fault of and negligence by the motorcycle driver. If traffic were stop and go and you were the last person in line and someone slammed into you with their motorcycle, it would be the fault of and negligence by the motorcycle driver.
Therefore, the crime here is not that the person stopped, but rather the reason that they stopped. This is an absurdly harsh sentence for the crime of stopping for the wrong reason. The prosecutor admitted as much when she said "what we hope is that a clear message is sent to society that we do not stop on the highway for animals."
It is the responsibility of the motorcycle driver to be prepared for any circumstance, including a stopped or disabled vehicle in the road.
I am going to brake for a dog in the road. If someone runs into me, they are following too closely or going too fast. Granted, this is extremely tragic, the driver of the car should have pulled off the road, should have put emergency flashers on...

very well said. i personally stop for animals but would not if it would endanger myself or another.
If this had happen in the States, I would hope the sentence would have been different. It would seem that it was the opinion of the Judge and not the opinion of the Law itself.

No, it wasn't "stupid". It was incredibly reckless. She stopped in the LEFT LANE of a highway. Not in retrospect --- she should have realized before she did it the problems that could have caused.
Pope Francis stops his car on the highway to bless a disabled girlIn one of the most amazing videos of his Papacy so far, Pope Francis was filmed stopping his official car
in the middle of a highway to bless a disabled girl.
During a trip by Pope Francis to Southern Italy on Saturday, the leader of the Catholic Church saw a banner that read 'Please Pope stop here to see an angel who has been waiting for you,' and 'Please come and bless little Roberta.'
The Catholic News Agency reports that when Pope Francis saw the banners, he asked his car to stop to get out and immediately reached out and kissed the disabled woman on the stretcher as a blessing.

People do that in the NW,instead of keeping your speed and getting through them.
I live in Montreal close to where this happened. The woman has not been sentenced yet...unlikely that she will get much if any actual jail, time.
The motorcycle driver was going 90 miles an hour, with his daughter on the back.
The verdict apparently took that into consideration and still came up,with guilty.....I think i that fact will play a big part in the sentencing.
