Why did my mouse stop working

I use a Mac Pro, vintage 2006 +-. I just changed the batteries in the mouse last week. The mouse works in Mail, Safari, and all other packages just fine. In LR5, the mouse works on the side panels. In Grid view, center panel, I can navigate using the arrow keys, but the mouse does nothing. I can move the curser around, but when I click an image, nada! When I open Grid view, the top left photo is selected. From there I can arrow to another photo, and hit D or E to develop or enlarge to loupe view. But no mouse. I think this started today when I hit command J to adjust the info displayed in Grid view. I cannot find anything that turned the mouse off. Any ideas?

I would suggest re-installing your wireless mouse driver.

Open your System Preferences (from the Apple menu) and navigate to the Mouse panel. Check the settings there to see if anything has changed.

You may also need to restart your Mac, especially if you've been using it for days with multiple programs and no restarts (just last night I tried watching a DVD on my Macbook Pro and it kept giving me "unsupported disk type" messages. A restart made it all work again!).

Since the problem is only in LR5 it might be a RAM issue - reboot your computer which will free up RAM and retry.

Thanks to all for the advice, except this last comment. Shutting down and starting over did the trick. I even turned off the mouse and let the computer re-acquire it. I guess it was a ram issue.

Glad you got it working again!

It's funny, I have two Mac laptops, a Macbook Pro (circa 2008) and a Macbook Air (2012). They both run the latest OS X (10.9.3), and in fact, the MBA was cloned from the MBP. Yet the older machine, which now serves as my "home" computer behaves differently than my newer one.

The only real difference I note is that my MBA is powered up and shut down as I travel. The MBP stays on for days at a time. I sometimes just shut it down to give it a fresh start at times, because it gets slow and cranky every now and then.

At one point in time, Macs were nearly bulletproof. While I still prefer them over PCs, they aren't nearly as rock solid as they used to be.

Incidentally, I have been a Mac owner/user since 1984!

When there's limited RAM in a system, having too many programs resident and in background can use up the allocated RAM space. I also suspect that your machine doesn't have max'd out RAM. You typically don't run into these type of problems when there's 16 or 32 Gig of RAM in a system. And when you rebooted, it didn't reload all the background stuff and also reloaded your drivers.

Like money, you can never have too much ram.

Get the app Freememory pro. I use it quite frequently, as the ram gets pretty full quickly with only 4gb. I can't put any more in my vintage Mac pro either. And even with 16 gb, it can happen. What happens is even though you might close out a photo or program, sometimes there is still stuff in ram. Freememory cleans it out quickly, like 10 seconds, and will will get back about 2 gb of ram. More if you are using 16.

Also.....every so often do this: either from a cold launch or from a Restart, immediately after you start up, hold down: Option, Command, the P and R keys. Keep holding until after the third chime....then let go. This resets the PRAM........house cleaning, so to speak.

This is absolutely not true. Apple engineers continue to improve and reinforce their system. My top of the line Dell had all kinds of issues where as every one of my Macs have been rock solid.
