Hi, I have a Nikon300 and a nikon 18-200mm lens. What i would like to know from the hogs is can you put a 2 tel converter on the lens and use it that way? it would give me a 36-400mm and i would not have to buy a bigger lens. thank for all your help.

Yes but you would in all probability loose 2 F-stops

You would lose 2 stops, and there would be an image quality hit. I don't think a super-superzoom lens is a good idea, but that's me.

I am going to say no, you cannot connect them.

Mid range zooms like the 18 - 200 VR, 18 - 70, 18 - 55 and 17 - 55 have too much junk in the trunk to allow the TC-20E to fit, even if they were fast enough for it to make sense.

The issue of the Nikon teleconverter "working" with the 18-200 isn't an autofocus problem (though that is a separate problem). The real problem is a mechanical one because the Nikon teleconverters have a protruding front element which can collide with the rear elements of a lens not designed to be used with the Nikon TC. Unless you don't mind throwing away over $1000 worth of lens+TC, even mounting a Nikon TC to an 18-200 should be avoided.

The 18-200mm DX does not have enough clearance on its rear end to mount any TC-nnE on.

I am not so sure that is a yes.
It may not physically connect without breaking stuff.

You're right, there was more I should have said: the Nikon TC will not work with that lens, because the TC has a portion which protrudes out past the lens mount, and the 18-200mm sticks out past the lens mount as well.

I believe there are third-party TCs which would "work".

I'm always touting the Kinko Pro 300 1.4 teleconverter. It retains virtually all the quality and sharpness of the lens it's attached to and will cost you only one f-stop. I know this doesn't double your lens focal length, but it will get you closer to your subject with less pain. It is designed in a way that it does not interfere with the rear lens elements of any lens as opposed to the Nikon converter which can only be used with certain lenses.

TC are intended for telephoto lenses. Even if it fit, not a good idea if you care about image quality.

Also, you will loose auto focus on any thing over f4 with a 2x.

TC affect image quality. All of them to various degrees. 2x are very bad, 3x are absurd.

Here is an example of what's at stake. Keep in mind that the 120-300 is a decent lens. It would be worse with a lesser lens.
