Eventually you will need a tripod. Whether you buy it now or wait is up to you.

Once you begin using a tripod you'll know sharp images and won't be satisfied with less.

You might also consider a monopod as a future equipment purchase. A good 1 will cost under $100.00 and give you a portability that a tripod won't. I have a Tiltall that I purchased used in the late '80's & it's still going strong.

Most serious photogs wind up with TWO tripods - one lighter/smaller/cheaper and one bigger/heavier/expensive......used appropriately.

Get a cheap tripod NOW if:
You do any landscapes(slow film/ low ISO=long exposures) you will come to love low light shots at dawn and dusk because that's where the most dramatic
pictures are ( low light = long exposures).
You want people to think" he must be a pro,he's got a tripod", often hilarious in your 1st year.
If your passion is action shots, and kids, you might not want one.
All a tripod does is eliminate camera shake, and even a cheap one helps. Mine was @ $30.00, and one day I'll upgrade.

I think the more common response you will get is buy a good tripod when you get one. I think the more important consideration is the head and the quick release system. I have had Bogen and Manfrotto versions, until I rented a 500mm f/4 lens and learned the value of the Arca-Swiss system. It is better, but more expensive. Are you ready to spend several hundred, maybe even more than $500, for a good support system? If you're not sure it would be worth it, I think you should wait until you start to encounter situations where you would benefit from the tripod, and then it is easier to convince yourself to spend the necessary amount.

Last year I asked the same question here and like you I received some very good advice. One member (who has since become a friend) recommended a brand of tripod called Red Snapper. I did my own research and eventually bought a Red Snapper tripod and head and I couldn't be more pleased.

I see that you're in Dublin - I'm sure that Red Snapper would post to there.

Here are the links to what I bought:

http://www.redsnapperuk.com/camera-accessories/RSH-12_Ball_head.html

That's just under £250 for both.

Good luck.

Good morning! I am in the group that says get it now.:) And get a nice one that will hold your gear up without worrying about it failing. The tripod makes a great platform for playing with your settings on every shot! No need to juggle stuff around trying adust the camera. And the target you are shooting stays framed while you play. I was in the yard last night, pitch dark playing with setting to get lighting bugs.:):)
