I have tried the MeFOTO options in stores a bunch of times, and they are quite compact but not particularly light. I have not replaced or complemented my monopod with a MeFOTO tripod because they simply are not as sturdy. If I get a micro 4/3 system, the MeFOTO might join the set.

I've been to Dayton, and I think you would look better with hot pink, kind of like Who Let The Dogs Out kind of effect.

I have and rely on both of these devices but when push comes to getting a great shot a tripod is the only way to go.

No laughing here!

The very useful part of using a normal monopod is that it supports the weight of the camera and lens. With a full frame camera and a telephoto lens, this can help a lot.

However, that string is better than nothing.

Monopods are quicker to set up and stable. The Giotto carbon fiber is very light and weighs around a pound +. Not overwhelming to carry if you are hiking.

What is your longest lens? You can always just extend one leg of a tripod and - bingo - you have a monopod.

A lot depends on the patience of whoever will be with you. A monopod can be carried extended, or set up very quickly. Not so much with a tripod.

I was going on a trip with a group, and I asked the leader about bringing a tripod. He said that the delay would not work with the group. I didn't need it anyway.

I took a short tripod to place on the hood of the truck, sand bag to place on the side window and last a monopod which I only used at Katmia.

Confuius says: A tripod can always be used as a monopod in a pinch, but a monopod can never be used as a tripod.

For a trip to alaska i would take neither.

One seems to shoot big and bright in Alaska. F 11+ at 250th or better and you don't need a tripod or monopod for that kind of shooting.
