I have tried the MeFOTO options in stores a bunch of times, and they are quite compact but not particularly light. I have not replaced or complemented my monopod with a MeFOTO tripod because they simply are not as sturdy. If I get a micro 4/3 system, the MeFOTO might join the set.
The very useful part of using a normal monopod is that it supports the weight of the camera and lens. With a full frame camera and a telephoto lens, this can help a lot.
Monopods are quicker to set up and stable. The Giotto carbon fiber is very light and weighs around a pound +. Not overwhelming to carry if you are hiking.
I am going on a trip to Alaska and wondering if I should take a tripod or monopod.
A lot depends on the patience of whoever will be with you. A monopod can be carried extended, or set up very quickly. Not so much with a tripod.
I was going on a trip with a group, and I asked the leader about bringing a tripod. He said that the delay would not work with the group. I didn't need it anyway.
