I'd like to get a monopod that will collapse down to maybe 18".
I'd also like it to be $25 or less.
Any suggestions, or is this too unrealistic?

They are out there. Target, Walmart, Shopko, Best Buy, or any store like that will have $20 monopods, just don't expect them to have any durability, they won't.

OK, what price range would be reasonable?

$70 will get you into a Manfrotto 680B, 22 pound load rated, collapses down to 20 inches, weighs only 1.8 pounds, and will outlast you.

The bottom leg section on each is only about 5/16" in diameter, the first time you twist to follow some action you will either bend or break it. Those are sized for a P&S or small video camera. Buy one now, another next month, and another next year, or buy one GOOD monopod to last forever. Your money, your choice, spend it however you feel is wisest.

Well. Have to say "Thanks," once again for your valuable advice. I happened to be in Target. Only one there. Not a really good quality.

So, when I get my pension check at the end of the month, or I win at the casino Monday or Tuesday, I'll be buying the one you suggested.

MT recommended the Manfrotto 680B 4-section aluminum mono for $70 and I second that one. He didn't mention however, an added advantage to a sturdy monopod. Collapse the bottom section and it makes a great baseball bat if anyone's bothering you. Please remove camera first. :)

Actually, I did think of that before you mentioned it. We're planning a trip to Italy in 2015 and one can never tell when it might come in handy.
I suppose it could also serve as a walking stick.
