Interested if anyone has tried using a 85mm 1.8 prime lens with a 1.4 TC. With my 1.3 crop camera and the TC it works out to about 155mm equivalent without losing too much lens speed. Am I missing something with this thought?
Notorious T.O.D.
The Canon 1.4x TC will not physically fit on that lens. A third party such as Kenko, Tamron, Vivitar, etc. will work. I believe the designation for the Kenko is MC4. I have tried it out and it works fine. Since I have a Canon 70-200mm, I don't need the 1.4x on the 85mm.
the Canon 1.4X and 2x TCs work pretty well with the Canon L series lenses which they are designed to work with. However, my experience with TCs is that if you're going to use one, make sure the TC and lens are the same brand and designed to work with each other. If teleconverters worked all that great, no one would buy expensive 600 and 800mm lenses....they would simply buy 300 and 400 mm lenses and equip them then with 2x converters. I haven't seen very many pros going this route and there's a good reason for it....
some third party tc's work very well with major brand lenses. it's a try it out deal. more pros than you think use teleconverters. with all the good 70-200mm zooms I just can't see a reason to pair a tc with a 85mm lens.
