I'm getting prepared to fly out of town for a week and intend to carry on my camera gear. I just had a thought: can I take my spare battery or will the TSA confiscate it?
Not had a problem here. I flew a few months ago with my entire kit (including several batteries) as carry-on with no issues.
I always take mine - never an issue.

Take it in your carryon. I have never had a problem with that. On my recent flights overseas they warned us they could confiscate any found in searched checked-baggage ( Malaysia 370).
I have always carried my on the plane in my camera bag. Each battery has the cap on it and I place each battery in a separate plastic bag. Never had any problems going through airport security.

Loose Lithium batteries are prohibited in CHECKED bags. Batteries installed in an electronic device are allowed.
Loose batteries are allowed in CARRY-ON bags provided they are properly packaged. The plastic cover that came with the battery is considered proper packaging. I always put a rubber band around it so that it can't come off. No special packaging is required if they are installed in an electronic device, such as a camera.
All the info you need is here:

If it's a Li battery, you have to take it on.
I always have batteries in my carry-on, but in a case not loose.

I've traveled the world with spare camera, cell phone, and Android tablet Li-Ion batteries and I have them in plastic cases AND I cover the contacts with a piece of electrical tape just to be sure. Never had a problem...

Never had a problem with spare batteries in my carry-on. I always have spares, and a charger or two, in my Lowepro camera backpack.

I too have traveled many times on local aircraft with my camera bag with me on the plane. I have several 2A battery's in a compartment in the bag, no problem. Sometimes TSA will take the bag and go through each compartment and even swab the lens and lens connection. Never was told not to carry the loose batteries. Traveled to Italy & Ireland with the camera bag in tow also.
something else that was interesting - once at the airport in Frankfurt the German screeners took me and my camera bag into secondary screening and actually took photos using my Nikon (I think that may have been the D200 or D700).
I guess they wanted to make sure it was really a camera. This was several years ago, I can't remember exactly when.
Never had a problem with batteries but they should be in your carry-on
I always have all my gear with me when I board. I don't carry much but I always have extra batteries, battery charger, multiple lenses, and a few memory cards. Never gave it a thought and never had a problem with any of it, either for domestic or international travel. My husband seems to get more attention with the tablet. And last time I went domestic I had a few bars of gift soap for my host and dang I thought I was going to get arrested for it...they powdered it and swiped it and held me for about 10 minutes so they could do so.
