JUDGING PHOTO ART #1 IMPACT
I would like to start twelve new discussions for judging photo art. One at a time. I did a search on HOG and found a discussion by Blueeyes3515" in WV. I would like to give her credit for introducing me to :PPA, Professional Photographers of America and their 12 elements of judging.
I am hoping that these 12 discussions go slow but become helpful for me and I hope for others.
I honestly do not have an expertise in any of these elements.
The Twelve elements listed below are in accordance to their importance.
1. IMPACT
2. TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE
3. CREATIVITY
4. STYLE
5. COMPOSITION
6. PRESENTATION
7. COLOR BALANCE
8. CENTER OF INTEREST
9. LIGHTING
10. SUBJECT MATTER
11. TECHNIQUE
12. STORY TELLING
Impact is the sense one gets upon viewing an image for the first time. Compelling images evoke laughter, sadness, anger, pride, wonder or another intense emotion. There can be impact in any of these twelve elements.
How to you create "IMPACT" and do you feel it should be #1? Feel free to add your photos to help teach the subject.
I think the idea is great. I will be keeping an eye on it and will input if I can.
I found this information written by Carla Botha, Senior Lecturer at the College of Digital Photography, in regards to creating impact.
Tip 1: Simplify
Tip 2: See the light
Tip 3: Make use of colour
Tip 4: Exciting camera angles
Tip 5: Distort with intent
Tip 6: Managing contrast
Tip 7: Shooting from the hip
Personally, I dont know enouph to try to teach it myself.
OK. You have my interest.

I wanted to add that nudes will create impact, but I know this is not the place.

I am going to take this list to my photo club, and shake them up!
I can't say I've ever tried to create impact. I prefer subjects that already have it.

Interesting point, Carioca! It could make a point of departure for study:
Find a simple subject, nothing special (a hat hanging from a hook, a broom leaning in a corner...) and find one or more ways of adding, or "bringing out" impact.
If your photo lacks #1, IMPACT, or your viewer is not IMPACTED by your photo, #2 through #12 become irrelevant!
This could be a fun exercise!
Interesting and I'll have to think about it. At first thought, I tried to think of a photo of mine that was impactful to me. It was a photo of people...mainly my daughter crying as my son was leaving for the Navy. Another of my daughter placing flowers on her grandpa's grave. They specifically impact me, not sure what others would say about them. They do evoke emotion. Cheryl
I took a one day private lesson about a year ago. One of the exercises was to wander around the park we were in and snap shots of anything. We were both shooting 50mm fast lenses. Afterwards we sat down and studied the shots. He asked me what I saw as we scrolled through the photos. What did I want each to show??
This was an excellent exercise in impact, there was only 2 in about 50 that I could point out something that I was focused on to make an impact!!
This is a great list!

This topic has been in discussion with our club as well. I've passed this information on to the program chair. Thanks all for your contributions.

Meives,
Yes, I do believe it should be #1, I have seen simple shots have impact. I don't remember the photographer but I do remember the shot. Head of a nail dripping water, the drop reflecting a meadow, this was probably 20 years ago.

will follow and add as I can. Suggest 1 per week - and repeat as we all learn form doing. Thank You.
Impact if a book does not get my attention within first chapter of two I do not read on. If pic has impact will cause me to look harder and longer at it. Test by scanning several thumbnails, impact gets you to enlarge.
