This is a request to UHH, if I could get members living near oceans, lakes and rivers with sand beaches to send a tablespoon of sand to

Dr. Gary Greenburg
c/o Institute for Astronomy
34 Ohia Ku St
Pukalani, Hawaii 96768

this would be greatly appreciated. Gary (sandgrains.com) is working on a new book about sand and what it actually looks like and the minute life in that sand. Sand from the USA and the world is needed. Please note where the sand was collected and PLEASE include your email address. we will send you photos of your sand if it is used in the new book. Again, Thank You. Aloha Rob

My wife might go to the beach today. If not I'll go and get some for you. We're 2 & 1/2 blocks from the Atlantic on Long Island.
I'm assuming that "...where the sand was collected..." means just the beach, city and state.

Does this sample have to be uncontaminated by the container I put it in? In other words, can the container be a used, but cleaned out container?

ALWAYS glad to help science.

I'll be near a sandpit in the Midwest today. I'll pick some up for you! Cool idea.

Sand from the beach well above the high water line at the line or below it?

Thanks, we're trying to get sand from all over the USA, a big project but it'll be a hoot when finished. Some grains are micro jewels.

Sand from below surface is much older. Some was submitted from a potash mine in Aurora,NC and contained a wealth of micro fossils, fascinating.

Packed & Ready to go.
Are you looking for meteorites in the samples, too?

My wife and I go to the Tucson Mineral and Gem Show every February and I'm thinking of heading up to Meteor Crater and gathering some sand there. I'm sure we would find shocked quartz grains and micro meteorites. If I were to find micro meteorites that would open up lots of questions, like when, where's the impact crater and is this new? Weathering of irons would be rapid in/near a water environment. Thanks so much!

My son-in-law teaches chemistry at Fordham U., but his field of study is astrochemistry. He analyzes meteorites for content and to see what part of the universe they come from.
When he was getting his doctorate at Purdue, he showed us a sample of the meteorite from the Meteor Crater. He's also attached to AMNH.
