I have had conflicting information on this program that Microsoft wants to put on my computer.
Please update the information I have with your knowledge
on the subject.
I am trying to determine if I should allow them to install it on my computer.

It is their bundled anti-virus, spam and phishing app. I know several who use it without issue. Of course, any protection software is only as good as the last blocked threat.

My nephew is a programmer/hacker (legitimate) and he recommended Microsoft Security Essentials. Updates are automatic and so far no invaders have landed in my computer. Probably the least intrusive anti-bad guy software I've ever seen.

I have been using it since it came out and now have Security Essentials on six different computers we use. Together with some common sense it detects and helps prevent a lot of malware. It is free and it works! What more can you say?

Windows Defender is also known as Microsoft Security Essentials depending on the version of Windows you own.

It was a good program at one time, but sadly Microsoft has let it go. It is still works, but only if you regularly update and run the scans.

Just a note: I do run Windows Essentials every day. Why not, doesn't cost anything to keep it updated.
I also use Anti Malwarebytes, seems to me that Windows essential catch that ornery stuff sooner.

In my investigation I have found that Windows Defender cannot be installed on top of Window essentials. That may be my answer.

Security Essentials is one of the top rated anti-virus programs available and is the top rated among the free programs.

"It is still works, but only if you regularly update and run the scans." No anti-virus program is worth anything if you do not regularly update it.
