I have been experimenting with the 40mm pancake lens on my 5D MK III camera. Over all it is a decent little lens. AF is quick and it is fairly sharp edge to edge at f/4 and above.
The 40mm lens on a full frame camera is almost the perfect focal length for general use (for me). A 28mm has too much wide angle distortion while the 50mm is sometimes too much telephoto.
Lens flare is pretty well under control without a hood. I have attached a photo taken at f/10 at 1/400th shutter directly into the sun that was behind the tree. The sun has a nice star effect without using a star filter.
Seems like the reviews for this lens are overwhelming positive, particularly when you look at the price point for a 2.8.
Great little lens, use mine on a T1i and T4i, though I have and use a tulip style lens shade, Bob.
I use mine on a 70D canon. And it is a great lens to carry around. Not heavy., and you can carry it in a small camera bag, Takes great pics, and you can't beat the price!
Based upon reviews here on UHH and elsewhere I have purchased this lens to act as my main lens as I depart for a cruise of the Baltic Sea capital cities. Anticipating few long range landscape that would require a telephoto. Instead plan on getting street shots and architectural shots, both outside and inside. I also plan on taking the Canon 24mm to use on my Canon T3i (1.6 factor).
We shall see what happens.
