Pentax just announced their newest camera the 645d. It is a 40 megapixel camera with an image sensor measuring 43.8 x 32.8. The frame rate is not suitable for fast action photography at only 3/sec, but I bet it is great for landscapes and other slower photography. I can only image a macro shot with it. My mouth is drowning, my wallet is saying let's go play Powerball. I have to admit it is close in price to the Nikon and Canon top of the cameras. If I was in the market for either, I would seriously consider it. The magic number--list price "only" $8,496.95. Plus lenses.

what would be even better is if they put swings and tilt on it. Now that would be really terrific.

I did, note the all caps. Can you hear my wallet wimpering from there? But it is better than the other choices in Med Format.
Think I will dig out my Bronica ETRSi then shoot and scan some negs if I just have to play with med format anytime soon.

Amazon lists this camera for $6,996.95 & FREE Shipping:
http://www.amazon.com/Pentax-645D-Medium-Format-Digital/dp/B004A4U886It seems tempting. Yet I note these higher-end cameras have a limited selection of expensive lenses.
For now I will stick with my Canon 6D.

You are mixing up the discontinued 40mp 645D CCD model with the new 50mp 645Z CMOS model that is replacing it.
I'm going to buy 2, keep one for parts!
When it comes to medium format have a look at the price of bodies on a site like B&H The pentax 645D is about the cheapest available and the improved 645Z is not that much more expensive. Then you move on to medium format camera's at twice the price or more.
Makes the Pentax medium format cameras seem like a comparative bargain.
It's worth noting that the 645 digital cameras can use the 645 film lenses. These seem to be fairly cheap for lenses on ebay. There also exists a kmount to 645 mount converter which may allow K mount lenses at least those designed for full frame to be used.

This is going to be an interesting year. Hasselblad and others will be looking in their rear view mirrors as this camera body is about 1/3 their price. Now if the glass is available and quality . . . The downward price pressure on existing medium format digital systems is going to be intense. Start saving your pennies for new camera and processing computer.
My $0.03 (inflation is not really dead)
Bob, my opinion is still 2cents.lol, I really liked that a lot.
