Sony hex 400V

At the risk of exposing my photography ignorance (PI), I purchased a Sony HX 400V a week ago and am trying to learn how to take reasonably good photos. Going to Alaska next week and am in the process of "cramming" before I go. The camera has a 50x optical zoom and I know most photos will be landscapes or wild life from a distance. Camera has lots of options. I did purchase a circular polarizing filter.
