Hi all....Well my old Canon 5d with 27-135 lens is back in its original box and ready for resale. Good bye old friend...it was fun. I've had my way with its Nikon d800e replacement on a trip to Northern England and Prague and thought I'd document the experience for anyone considering a similar upgrade. Ultimately, I got what I wanted. Much more detail, croppability (new word) and 24-36 inch sized print potential (which will require my purchase of a new Epson large format printer). Technically, the Nikon is no where near as easy to use as the old Canon....I'm at the beginning of a long learning curve...ie...couldn't figure out why the AF found its focus when the shutter was pushed half way down...then moved out of focus immediately before fully pushing the shutter. Only happened when focused on closer subjects. Since there are several more options for setting the AF it took me awhile to figure out which one would stop that annoying behavior and I wound up manually focusing many early shots. I fixed the setting but still not 100% sure what I did. I may have had the lens hood on cock-eyed which increased the vingnette on one corner of the frame and threw the AF off. Looks like I might need to learn some new things ....damnit all!! Anyway...here are some shots for those interested, and thanks to all who helped me make my final equipment choices.

This is why I like to see people getting new cameras. It makes them happy, and they give their brains some exercise. Nice shots.

i presume, since it's "always on" it activated by one of your buttons on the front or back of the camera body

You might consider changing your focus to the back button which has been discussed on this forum many times. You won't have to worry about the shutter and the back button is very convenient. I have had a D800 for almost 2 years and it is a great camera. I am sure you will continue to enjoy yours.

It's daunting. But I feel I'll eventually not have to use all of them...ie. I don't do studio or portrait work and I don't shoot video for any serious reasons. I do like the easy use of aperture and shutterspeed dials in manual mode. Auto ISO is ok too but there are setting limits. I feel as I get more familiar with the camera in general I may have a set of favorite ISO ranges for my most common shooting situations and will therefore not rely on auto ISO as much. There is a procedure for assigning custom functions to buttons that are not often used....but after reading about it I had to have a nap for fear that my head would explode. If you are serious about checking all these things out you can probably download an owners manual from somewhere.

You will love the camera. I found Ken Rockwell very very helpfull for learning the camera as well as adjusting settings and shooting menus. For the 800e you can down load his settings. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d800/users-guide/

His user guide is an easy walk through. One of the Nikon challenges is if you change it it stays changed till you change it back.

Have you tried back button focus? I think it is much easier to use than pressing the shutter button half way down.

Look up and learn AF and AS settings on auto focus. It is the "toggle switch on the front of your camera body near your left ring finger when gripping. Learn the differences by reading all about them.

Do this "research/looking-up/learning all about each function every time you come up against something new, and you will build your knowledge- and never say "I don't know how I fixed it". Learn it right, and never have to go back and screw around with this one thing again, over time you'll learn them all and your learning curve will level out.

I expect you have it set to dynamically focus on a single point so that the camera refocuses as you move slightly. This function is meant for focusing on moving targets, like a runner or car race, etc. The camera will "follow" the moving subject by constantly re-focusing.

The other setting sets and freezes the focus on whatever it was pointing at when you pushed halfway down. This is handy when shooting a portrait, you focus on the eyes- still holding halfway down and re-compose the photo. You'll see wedding professionals doing this- bobbing their camera first up , and then down to get in the feet. Looks like they don't know what they are doing. But now you'll know... they do it rather then move the single focal point box that appears dead center by default in the interest of speed, as you can move this point with the pad on the back right, but is faster doing the "bob"!

If you worked around by choosing many focus points, you may have gotten it to work- but you are not in command of your camera! LOL Laughing because the D800 is a bear to totally command. Like an onion, it has many layers. But this setting is a good one to know.

I didn't tell you which is which- learn it or you won't be able to command it when you could use it!

The best things I did, beside buying my D800E, were to switch over to rear focus and to attend a two day, Nikonians class that walked us through every menu and button. This is not my Nikormat. Nice shots! Better shooting ahead...

NYjoe, you might want to click on the "Quote Reply" so that the person you are commenting back to knows that you are directing your appreciation towards him/her.

Secondly, I know that the D800 is complicated. I've got a friend that purchased one when it first came out and he still has problems with the menu system of the Nikon camera bodies. Good luck figuring out the settings.

Congratulations! Welcome abroad to the Nikon Land!
You can just assign the "AF-ON" button for focusing lock. For AFs, just press it once to lock on the subject you want, for AFc, you need to press and hold on the button to continue focusing. Of course you can chose how many focus point. Your D800 has 51 max. point.
D800 is a great camera, before I purchased the Df to replace my old D200, I once considered the D800, but the huge pixel turned me off. I am very happy with the Df.

Happy Shooting

Hammer....I was raised by post war british immigrants and I love GB (however it is defined these days) and have been back and forth many times since Freddie Laker first made it easy. This last trip was my first expressly to experience the north - not just drive through it on my way to Scotland. The south from London to St. Ives has always been the easier trip with no shortage of amazingly unique and beautiful sights and characters. However, I found the north just as unique, more accessible, cheaper and less of a post-card presentation of itself..as London has become. In fact, I have skipped London the last few trips as it seems now to strive toward something less unique and more global while celebrating the fixed icons of what it use to be. So by trying to be dynamic in this way it seems to have washed away its character. I'm sure I have a skewed view since I don't actually live there...but that's just what it seems like to me. As to money, we middle class American travelers have less and less of it. Corporations and Movie Stars have it all and they own lawyers and politicians to insure it stays that way. Same there I would guess. Still, if I stand still long enough in the UK I can feel the money creeping out of my pockets due to an army of vending machines designed to accept it for any possible need I might have, movement I might make, or idea I might have. Same in NYC really....except in UK it seems to radiate into all cities, towns and villiages. I think this post should have been placed in the opinion section with all the other right wing raving...but I'm usually a lefty! Sorry folks.

Glad to read that someone else has just taken ownership of a new Nikon D800e !

I just received mine about three days ago and, wow, is there lots to learn !!!!! AND, yes, I agree with you about how the Canon 5D was much easier to work with.. My 5D Mark II is much easier to work with, but I do appreciate the extra detail the 36 megapixels the D800e gives..

If anyone would like to help me, I would like to ask what is the best method to export images out of Lightroom 5 to a professional lab for making a large color print ? I am suggesting that I would like to eventually have an enlargement made 30"x40" and need to know how to export the image out of Lightroom 5 to a lab and once I know how it is done, I would like to also know if exporting a Raw file image is the best way to go ?

In advance, I thank those who may reply :) :-D
