I'll be spending about 6 weeks in the Oakland area. I'm looking for recommendations for "photo ops" in the East Bay area. (I've got San Francisco and the coastline north and south covered.)
If you have the time, check out Monterey. The aquarium, 17 Mile Dr., Carmel, Carmel Valley are all very photogenic areas. If you do the aquarium, plan for a full day to see it all.

Daf, I'll add a few.
Wander around the UC Berkeley campus, lots of good foto ops. Especially the Campanile(clock tower) and the interior of the Hearst mining building which is spectacular. The main library(Doe/Bancroft) is nice( there are more than 50 libraries on campus). If you can get into the football stadium, that's a great pic. As mentioned, Sather Gate.
Get to the Berkeley Marina at sundown for a shot of the GG bridge. Also kite flying and remote control planes at the marina park(ask).
In Oakland go to the Cathedral of Lights.
In Tildon park there is the steam locomotive and the merry-go-round.
The Rose Garden on Euclid,(Berkelely Northside).
On any Tuesday night, catch a meeting of my camera club, the Berkeley Camera club. Good luck. ;-)

Treasure Island, mid point Bay Bridge, great for City shots after dark. Then on to Embarcadero, Shots of the 2nd half of the bay bridge with lighting sculpture. Also from TI shots of the sunset of the Golden Gate. Then on to south anchorage of GG shoot from above the traffic time shot lights trailing across the bridge. The Mormon Temple at night up in the oakland hills, it is always lit. The possibilities are limitless in this area. Goes east for views of Mt Diablo.
My girlfriend's family lives in pittsberg and she's got a lot of pretty sisters...
Do the Lawrence Livermore late afternoon and watch the fog roll in across SF Bay. Very impressive event
Stay away from Oakland at night, unless you want to take pictures of drive-by shootings, etc!

That's pretty unnecessary hyperbole in response to a legitimate question.

Check out
www.johnnyfuncheap.com for free/cheap events and things to do in the area. It covers SF and the East Bay. Many of them include things you might want to photograph. Also, there is interesting architecture around downtown and the lake. If you'd like a shooting partner while you're in the area, send me a private message.
Oakland is a dangerous place at night if you don't know the city -
