I upgraded about 3 months ago from the 7000 to the 7100 and my Nikon speed light has not been acting correctly.
Sometimes it miss fires and the K is way off, on auto and 5000 I get readings as high as 8000 and i have to make the adjustments in Raw.
Has anyone had this issue?
The SB-600 is about 8 years old
I am planning on bringing the camera in and checking it with another flash,
Any suggestions on what to look for?
The fact that it is misfiring and the K is off makes me think that the camera is not communicating properly with the flash.
Is that a camera issue or just an old flash that needs updating.

I do not understand "the K is way off". What does that mean?
I use my SB-600 weekly on my D5200. It always does exactly what I request.

White Balance is a camera sensitivity function. There is no WB control on a Nikon SB-600 speedlight.

I realize that but does the camera read the flash incorrectly or is the flash giving a false reading to the camera ?

Thanks

Can't help with that but I have an SB700 and it works just fine on my D90 and my D7100...a great flash unit if you are looking for a new one.

Thanks, If I am going to upgrade I will go to the 910.
There is a great price deal right now for $464.00 compared to the $319.99 for the 700.
Over kill for me, but I cannot pass this one up.

Thanks again

The SB-600 cannot change the Kelvin temp of its flash output. It cannot "give a false reading to the camera". That is like saying the sun gives a false reading to the camera. Both the SB-600 and the sun are consistent, but slightly different, Kelvin temperatures.

My Nikon D90, D5000, and D5200 are all set to Auto WB, and I have never had a problem. WB makes no difference to raw capture, but will influence JPG capture. I record raw + high JPG; review the JPG for focus, exposure composition, etc.; then tweak the raw for final presentation.

Yeh, I looked at that as well but couldn't justify the price and yes, overkill for me as well...

When you say misfires are you saying it doesn't fire when it should? Perhaps it is faulty which could explain the white balance being off as well. Like if the flash tube is going bad. Admittedly I really don't know... just throwing out a possibility...

I love my SB-910, I also have an SB-800 and use both off camera with umbrellas on my D7100. Makes for good portraits and great real estate indoor shots with wide angle (10-24mm lens)

You might also want to get the SB-600 checked as the bulb may be weakening.

Not sure about your SB-600 but might be a good off camera option in remote.. (can't remember if it supports remote or not.. but I think it does)

TRY THAT! Put your camera in Commander mode and the SB600 in slave mode and see what happens. If the flash works properly then that's another clue. If it still fails then....

Greg - where are you seeing that price? Looks too good to be true.

Sounds like you have a setting wrong in your camera. What is your W/B set to?

Also, are you using the flash directly on the hot shoe or are you using an off camera cord? If using a cord, is the cord causing it to misfire? My short cord does this pretty often and I need to replace it.
