I purchased the Sigma 180mm f2.8 macro for my Nikon D7100 and D610. When I put the lens on the camera and adjust it for back focus issue it will focus, but not lock on focus as does the Nikon 105mm or the Tamron 180mm. The Sigma 180mm has OS and I am hand holding it as with the other lenses, however unlike the other lenses the Sigma will not lock on focus so the slightest of movements throws the focus off. Has anyone else experienced the problem with this lens?

And the Tamron 180mm works perfectly, my friend has a Tamron 180mm that he loaned to me and I did not have any trouble locking focus like I am having with the Sigma 180 for $1,000 more than the Tamron 180. On top of that the Sigma has significant back focus issues.

90% of the macro folks here use manual focus. I suggest setting lens back to 0 with the fine focusing and trying to shoot manual.. If you are using Auto focus then Any Movement will result in the lens trying to refocus.. If your shaking trying to hold the lens in an upward position and again using auto focus your lens will rattle back and forth trying to focus.

I personally, rarely, if ever, use AF for macro shooting. However, when I do use AF, I use BBF. I doubt I will ever go back to shutter button AF.

Yes, I have the same issue with my 180 when I tried using AF for macro. No back focus issues on my end (Canon). In good light it works well for non-macro.

UPDATE: I contacted Sigma support and described my problem to them and they agreed that there is a problem with the lens and that I should send it in under warrantee and they would fix the problem at no charge. I am sending it today and will let everyone know the results when it is returned from Sigma repair facility in New York.
