LENS UPDATE for my canon 600d 55x250 kit lens

Hi all, any good advice re a better lens than my 55x250 kit lens, without breaking the bank, I had thought of the canon 70x300 IS USM which is available her in Australia for around $500AD, I find the kit lens is slow when going after birds, plus the small amount of extra reach with a 300mm lens, would be helpful, I realise that the 70x300 is not the best I can get, but for the money available, it might have to be. thanks for all advice, Colin. Oh my camera is a canon 600d, which I find very good.

I would suggest getting something a little shorter in the zoom range but faster in the aperture. Tamron's 70-200 f/2.8 is tack sharp and great for shooting birds/other critters as you can crop without losing a lot of sharpness.

You may wish to consider the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 USM lens:

Hi Colann,
I would be interested to learn what you decide. I have the same lens (canon 70-300mm is). I find it to be vey good, but have wondered about alternatives such as those suggested by others responding to your question. Thanks!

Do you mean 60D? Haven't heard of a Canon 600D.

The 600D is the T3i in the USA.

I have found the 55-250mm to be sharper that the 70-300mm f/4 - 5.6 IS USM lens under most circumstances. This is from my experience with the Canon T2i. After about 200mm the 70-300mm becomes very soft- almost unusable for me. I would invest in the 70-300mm DO or 70-300mm L version.

When you said the 600D is the T3i in the USA, I thought you might live in another country. I live in Missouri.

I'll look up the 600D to see what it looks like.
