Is anybody using the foldable rubber lens hoods. They look interesting not only for shooting aquariums but fitting in camera bag. Looks like they might take less space and stay on the lens, also very cheap. Any comments or suguestions?

I have 2 rubber collapsible lens hoods that I carry with me, both are leftovers from my Mamiya RB67 days, they slip right onto my 77mm filters and are VERY handy to use in the field.

Got one, I bought the cheap one from B&H. Works real good, double threaded screws into the camera threads, and filter screws into it; or the reverse. Be sure if you get one for these wide angle lenses, mine is a wide angle, and barely works with 28mm.
I have one, only because I wanted a hood and didn't want to spend a lot of money. Cheap. It works fine.
I have several; however, since most of my lens come with one i don't use them very often.
I have one for all sizes of lenses I have. I like these better than the hard hoods that come with some of my lenses, also some lenses do not come with a hood. When fold back when left on the lens will function as a soft rest for the lens when you set your camera down on a hard surfce. I do not rely on hoods for protection (as some will claim about the hard hoods) so these soft ones work well. One word of caution would be to watch for vignetting when these soft hoods are added to the end of a few filters. That is not enough to not use them.

The vignetting issue is exactly why I like the Mamiya rubber hoods, they do not attach to your threads so do not reduct your field of view. They slide on over the filter or the end of the lens. Any one that threads on like a filter CAN reduce the field of view, especially if used in conjunction with a filter.

Thats what i'm thinking fit in bag better and still serve the purpose
Thanks for your input everybody. Being a noob at this and also being afflicted with gadgetitis. My camera bag has grown from very small to a backpack that I dont want to have to carry too long. New topic what do most of you carry with you on a photo outting?
I would rather have a hood made specifically for a particular lens.
I purchased a rubber hood to use at an aquarium shoot (press against the glass to eliminate flash and roomlight reflection), but I did not use flash, so did not need it.

Believe me, gadgetitis is not an affliction of noob's. I just came from ordering a third tripod head, as I write. Its a life-long photographers sickness. :( :)
Get rid of the backpack, now you need a vest, B&H has some good ones. I just got mine, on the last order.

Could not agree more with your statement. Photography is an illness that cannot be cured..only treated with buying more gadets.

Back to your question, what to carry? If you first have an understanding of what you are going after, landscape, birds, other wildlife, then you will have an idea of what lens you will require. Tripod, equipment protective covering from the elements, extra batteries, memory cards. I always carry my 300mm lens with my 17/50 2.8 that really lives on my camera. Third lens I carry for really low light is my 85mm works great, and is fast. I also bring my SB 800 flash in the woods, though I rarely use it, but nice to have for close up fill shots. Not wanting to wear my back pack, I use a utility belt which I slide my extra gadets through, memories of my army days, and my trusty photographers vest with all the pockets. But that is just me, all depends what you are going after.

I wanted a photographers vest so badly, but my gadget budget was below B&H price for a nice vest. Ended up going to a sporting goods store and found a fishing vest for around $20. Serves my needs for now.
