Help
Not sure if this is a fledgling Bald Eagle?? It flew over our camp Saturday Morning and I was just able to react. Hoping someone knows if this a fledgling or some other type of Eagle. Not the best shot, but all I had time to get, Thanks.

Not positive but the beak looks like a mature eagle, its most likely an adult Golden Eagle.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it is an immature Bald Eagle

Thanks, but its not my shot, I didn't have a Golden Eagle head shot. One of the members of my photo club took this one at the zoo.

1 vote Golden Eagle, 1 vote Young Bald Eagle. I did catch site of an Adult during the weekend in the general area, doubt if that makes a difference.

could be either one, it's almost impossible to tell from the bottom like this. the golden eagle has a more "gold" color on its head, while the bald eagle is just a sort of mottled brown. they both have similar brown/white mottling on the underside, though the golden eagle, especially a mature one, has much less white. bald eagles get their white head and tail feathers and yellow beaks at between 4 and 5 years, when they reach sexual maturity. if you shot this in Florida, it's most likely a bald eagle. Golden eagles generally aren't found in the southeastern US.

Hi fstop22,
I'm fairly confident this is a sub-adult bald eagle, maybe 2 years old (no longer a fledgling). They don't get their adult plumage (white head) for a few years. Young golden eagles aren't as blotchy, and the adults have distinct patches under their wings. Hope this helps.

They took a nice shot. It's good you give them proper credit too.

A juvenile bald eagle, probably. Here are a couple shots I grabbed a couple years ago on the Yukon River of a juvenile bald eagle. These are the same bird, just a second or two apart.

I'm thinking bald eagle! Here are a couple of inmature bald eagles to compare this one with.

The consistent tail feather coloring does distinguish your shots as an immature bald eagle.
The distinctive light tail feathers with the tell-tale dark terminal band of the OPs eagle are what clearly show it is definitely a Golden Eagle. That is the only real way to tell a Golden Eagle from an immature bald eagle. Other signs are present but the tail feathers leave no doubt.
