If you read my last post and if you didn't I lost all my camera equipment in a fire (no insurance, D2x, D200,F5,F4S,801s-lenses(many))
Sticking with Nikon-where do I start again? Should I stick with a used 2x (which I know) or something alittle newer- lenses I know already what I want. Budget is limited-but flexible.
If you have any Nikon equipment you would like to sell run it by me (don't know if I'm suppose to do that here- Sorry).

Thanks to all that replied to the last post and to all remember "Back up- in many places"

That's painful to look at. Hopefully, the more important mementos were not lost and breathing creatures are safe and sound

I don't know the D2X, but I see on ebay they are priced higher than the D3100 which I own. The 14MP D3100 has a DX sensor and does HD video as well. It's lighter in weight and is a much newer camera. If you are on a budget like I was, look at the old manual (pre-AIS) Nikkor film lenses. Nearly all except the 24mm are dirt cheap ($50 to $100) and if you are willing to shoot in full manual mode, they work great. The D3100 has a 6x magnifier on the lcd screen which works fine for getting a sharp manual focus in live preview mode.

Good luck in whatever you choose.

Bob

All breathing things made it, couple fish in the aquariums didn't, along with 30+ years of negatives, but I scanned the ones I wanted and put them on a hard drive that made it, right beside my tower which was just a shell.
Thanks

I am glad you are considering getting back in the game.

A used D2X would be about $500-800 (keh.com). While it's built to Nikon pro-level standards, Nikon took a huge step forward in DSLR technology with the D3, which would be about $2000. If you are more interested in image quality than build quality, I think the D7100 would be a better camera than the D2X.

That picture is just sad! You should have warned us before posting something so obscene.

Seriously, I can't imagine the devastating loss from a fire. Hope your recovery from it is quick. I know you're thankful no one was hurt.

On the bright side, you have a perfect excuse to get new gear. Depending on your budget, I'd get a new upper level camera and a couple of whatever kind of high quality lenses you want. I'd also get a refurb second body. All FF.

It will be interesting to follow your progress.

If I were in your place, knowing what I know now, I would not go the DSLR route at all. The Fujifilm TX-1 is superior in so many ways to the DSLR - and I have a 200, a 90 and a 600 Nikon with a slew of lenses. Fate has wiped your slate clean, so why not start with the new technology?

Nikon has been selling refurbished, like new, D600's for a really good deal. You might start there. If you want a crop camera body, I'd go for a used D7100. If you don't feel comfortable buying used equipment from a PP then try some of the better known camera stores that have a very liberal return policy like B&H or Adorama. Also, purchase a quality lens or two and look to the future and buy only lenses that will work on both fX and DX platforms. Just my humble opinion. Others are entitled to theirs.

Sorry for your loss. Today's DLSR are light years ahead of the D2s Get the best you can afford D-4, D-800, D-610 or the D-7100. You have a very tough decision ahead, good luck.

Owwww! :-( Get a refurb D7100. :-D I have a broken D90 you can have for the shipping. They want over $350 to fix it and a used one in good shape can be had for $320

Don't dismiss the Pentax. If you are starting over, they are lighter and more rugged than either Canon or Nikon in the same price range. I was tempted, but already had a slew of Nikon lenses.
