Done---Backplate for D90 Needed

I loaned my d90 to my daughter, but the baby knocked to the sidewalk. Broke the lens, but the mount survived. However it dinged the corner of the backplate where the buttons are on the left of the screen. The QUAL button is pushed in and can't work. That keeps the camera from working.

If anyone has a broken D90 or a backplate, I might try to replace this. (The repair people say $300 for any D90 repair) It's not worth paying that. (A used body goes for about $250-300.)

Probably the first place I'd look is on eBay - for a non-functioning "for parts only" D90 listing that appears to have an intact backplate. Check every 2 weeks or so until you find a unit listed at a fair enough price.

Since the button is a gonner anyway and I can't remember when I used the qual button I would drill a small hole in it very shallow and crazy glue a paper clip tip or something and try and pull it out/up. I successful, use a drop of acetone to release the probe.

Three hundred dollars is a lot cheaper than what a new body would cost. That's what I told myself about a month ago when I sent my D200 in for a good going over after I noticed some hot pixels showing up on black backgrounds in my images. They took care of the pixel problem plus a few other issues that I didn't even know existed.

That camera suffered water damage. Not sure how that would affect the components in the panel.

Time for a new camera. I'd hold my daughter responsible so that she learns from this experience. But that's just me. She could purchase a used replacement.

Personally I would go with the Nikon service. You will end up with a "like new" camera with a warranty.

If it were me, I'd write it off. That or send it to Nikon if it has some sentimental value to you. Is everything else in the camera able to take a shock like that? In other words, if somebody gave you a broken camera like that, would you invest the time & money to fix it, & then possibly find something else wrong that you weren't aware of?

Nikon service will give your and estimate before any work is done. If you feel it is at or near the tipping point for replacement over repair you can make your choice. You can buy a Nikon refurb D90 for $500 from Adorama. You can buy a D7100 for $900+.

It will not only focus AF film AF lenses it will meter Ais lenses and verify focus with indicator lights. I upgraded my D90 to the D7100 and sold my D90 on eBay.

Best of luck
