"Halo" on BW images

I have a BW image (TIFF and JPEG) that I'm getting ready for competition. So far, it's about where I want it EXCEPT along some edges of the tree that's the main subject is a white border about 2-5 (not sure exactly) pixels in width. Any ideas on how I can get rid of it using LR, PS or whatever. I have a reasonably full complement of plug-ins, both Nik and Topaz, for PS.

I'd enclose a copy of the image except I want to hold that until after I submit my competition entry. I know this reduces some help possibilities for help down to speculation. Still, I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

Might not be the fastest way, but when I get a halo (usually from sharpening I believe), I just go to PS and set a very small clone tool stamp and then follow the white halo very closely at large magnification. The clone replaces the white halo with the color next to it.
I'm sure there are better and other ways, but this one works.

Thanks in advance.

I use the blur tool, Mode: Darken, Opacity 75%, pick a soft brush and "run a bead" across the white edges. it darkens the pixels somewhat, and blends it in with both the background and main subject.

Sounds like you may have over processed the shadows/highlights. Can you post a crop of the problem area

Over sharpening gives edges a white "glow". If you don't want a blur, you can try running a brush over the edges with "darken highlights" selected. Start with 5% and work up. Careful not to darken the subject while you are at it.

I am interested in the answers that you get as I have been docked points for the same halo that you are getting. It turns up in my images when using Photomatrix on B&W images.

This sounds like what might be happening to me. For the image in question I wanted a sharp edge on the main subject (a tree bent by the wind at the shore) and applied some extra sharpening. I'll try a few experiments to see if they help.

Thanks for the input.

Could it be chromatic aberration? in B&W it might appear white,

Thanks in advance.
