I agree. Just wanted to add...

Regardless what resolution you upload to Facebook, it will automatically scale it down to 2048px (max height or width), unless it's already below this. Moreover, all your EXIF will be stripped.

even worse the compression can be quite horrible with a much reduced colour range.

Ogul

I did not "chastise" you for responding. However, when you hit "Quote Reply" to my comments, I assumed you had an issue with something I wrote. Moreover, you started your comment with "I never said or even implied that you lost or gave up your copyright..." As if I challenged this in someway. Of course, you have a "right" to respond anyway you like, but I also have a right to clarify to others that you are not replying to me directly---you did not make that clear. I'm not sure if that was intentional or not?

Regardless, I don't disagree with your bottom line statement that if you don't want your copyrighted material copied or stolen, then you shouldn't be posting it on the Internet at all. However, for those engaged in business, the Internet can be used for good as well. A professional photographer must strike a balance between risk and exposure. Plus, "sharing" or posting low-res photos on the Internet isn't exactly ideal for printed wall hangers, but again, if you worry about stuff like this, you are better off not posting anything.

Agreed. Although FB may be "facilitating" (for lack of a better word) its members to "copy" the work of others, they are still in business to make money first and foremost. Their compression algorithm drastically reduces the quality of your image. This is intentional to save storage and bandwidth costs.

You mentioned color range or smooth gradients as an example. I find that the sharpness of my photos suffer the most. High contrast areas become smeary. I always apply a sharpening filter before posting to FB, which when viewed under any magnification over 100%, looks terribly over sharpened.

He didn't involve you at all. Someone asked him to explain the bit of FB legal terms, and he did. It was never implied that you were trying to say anything or make any specific point. And your "you don't want to argue this with me" comment made it sound like you were at odds over the terms when you are not at all, you're in complete agreement.

Thank you for the clarification. I have a great deal of respect for mdorn, but I sometimes I think we disagree over semantics. In any case, whether we agree or disagree, his opinions are always worth reading and his recommendations are always worth heeding.
