I have a 40+ year degree in film, as of late last year I have experienced a Nikon 3100 and my life will never be the same, so go Nikon as I have felt the compitition and the feel is not good. That's me but just close your eyes and decide, it's a weapion and a blind man could tell the differances.

My advice to you is to stick to the D40 - very versatile! I use one too and wouldn't part with it for all the Cameras in the world!

Hey Cecil, get your hands on a 3100 and feel the differance. I went digital 10 months ago after 40 years of film and my photography has exploded to a higher level then I ever knew before. The 3100 is considered amature because auto-focus and exposure are slow by pro standards but doesn't effect my style as I shoot a lot on tripod in manual mode.

Hey John! The D40 is a KILLER little camera! It was my first digital Nikon and I have had a BALL with it! I have hung onto mine because it's compatible with ALL of Nikon's old glass (if you don't mind manual focus) and it's just cool.
So, depending on your money, or lack of- here's a few I have had fun with and are well worth the money- (the 18-55mm is a very good lens for what it is, and I have one on a D90 right this minute- I love that you can get like 4" away from stuff)

So the first three will auto-focus on your D40, the 35 and 50 will allow you to take shots in lower light- and the third is a zoom if your partial to them, that is a good value/ IQ for the money.
The forth one is cheap AND good! It's a manual focus, pancake size lens that I have had A BLAST with on the D40.
Welcome to the Forum, hope to see you round!

I like to buy from B&H outta New York, shop til you drop but check them out as the service is excwllent and might help you make the prime (no pun ) decision too. Personally I love my 24-85 f-2.8-4 D it's as sharp as it gets and has macro focus. When you can't find it large go small and the world is everywhere when it's small.
