It's Not National BBQ Day

Saw that elsewhere on the net. It's worth sharing further.

So, have your "start of summer" festivities...

but please pause for a moment to reflect on the thousands of lives that were never lived fully because they sacrificed for us.

It's Memorial Day.

Memorial Day, in the fifties, the guys in the neighborhood had an annual routine. We'd go downtown to watch the Memorial Day parade, come back to our neighborhood to the cemetery to see them shoot off the cannon in ceremonies for veterans buried there, and then play a wiffle ball game in Jim's backyard while listening to the Indy 500 while it was still run on Monday.

Spent the morning of Memorial Day at our state capitol campus visiting each of the memorials and paying my respects to the fallen. I then went to a local cemetery to see the flags and to sit for a moment to remember. After that I took a slow walk through a pioneer cemetery and visited the graves of those buried there who served in the military back in the 1800s.

All in all a good day for me - it reminded me of why those of us who served did so and gave me yet another chance to say 'thank you' to those who didn't make it home alive.

We were part of a large crowd attending the 49th Memorial Day observance on the aft deck of the battleship North Carolina:

Marine BGen Robert Castellvi shared some fascinating facts about the battleship and North Carolinian wartime contributions. It was a fine event.
