An interview with Mr T,

Hi this is really great to hear that my image won, and there was some great pictures for this category

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have only been taking pictures for about a year now. What got me sated was my daughter's boyfriend had a basic camera he used on a day out and I thought that seems interesting and it went from there.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do the most?
I have a diploma in photography and master diploma from Karl Taylor training. I really try to split my disciplines quite evenly landscape, cityscape, portrait and now just started some wildlife with my sigma 120mm to 400mm I think by mixing your disaplines you gain something from each one that will improve the other.

3) in your opinion, what make a a good picture stand out from the rest?
Obviously the basics have to be right. Things like exposure, focus and composition. After that it really is up to the viewer to decided if that like it or not. So I think it's quite a personal thing your picture may appeal to the masses or just one person, but is suppose if the photographer likes the picture thats the main thing.

4) What equipment did you use and was there a special set up? Can you walk us through it?
I used a a canon 650d with a 17mm to 40mm canon L lens mounted on an old manfrotto tripod (built like a tank but great )with a remote shutter release so had lots of help from the kit. The evening was still quite bright so I used a neutral density filter and a 25 second exposer as the streets were quite busy and I wanted to blur some of the traffic and people.

5) Do you post process your final image, and if so can you Describe your work flow?
Yes the image has been post processed quite extensively. The image was first imported in to Lightroom where all three exposers only got minor tweets done. Next stop photomatix to merge as HRD from there into photo elements11 for more tweets on colour etc. further processing in Topaz colour adjust. Last stop a graduated filter applied in elements to bring the sky down Evan further.

6) Who or what influenced your photography and what inspired you to take the winning shot?
I'm still quite new to photography but my main influencers so far are Karl Taylor who runs a photo training company I find his training tips and style of teaching really beneficial. Also a photo critique company run by a guy called Mark Cleghorn he is quite brutal on critique but teaches you a lot really quickly.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, if so what?
I would have waited a bit longer for more darkness to take the shoot. That way a could have used an Evan longer exposure and got a nice dark blue to the sky.

8) What is the one thing you wished you knew before taking photos?
Being a teacher by trade I instinctively read up on things before I start to do them. So I had a fair idea of what to do theoretically. I just needed to practice. So I suppose my advice would be take time to read a little theory first then apply. These days you don't Evan need to read there are lots of resources from DVD' s and sites like YouTube.

9) What is your favourite photography assessory other than you camera?
Probably my filters I have a set of hi tech filters, grad ND and ND they really allow your to do things and create images that are spectacular.

10) If you had to chose one lens which one would it be and why?
My canon 24 mm to 105mm L Lens. Why great focal range and fantastic IQ.

11) What lighting equipment, if any do you take on a shot?
For this shot I obviously didn't use any at all. But I do use some unbranded cheap studio strobes with yongnuo 602 triggers for portraits. I also use youngnuo and Nissin speedlights.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I do draw a little so maybe that would be my way of expressing my arty side.

13) do you have any funny experiences about your photography?
Just memories of standing on a iron grate over the river themes at night taking a long exposure shoot think if this great gives way I'm a gonna, as I can't swim.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
You will be able to soon I'm starting an online gallery called focal point imagery. Where you will be able to view and evan buy my work. I just need to get cracking and set the site up as I now have a range of images to upload.

15) do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Just to keep trying to learn, there are some great resources out there and a lot of them are for free. Try different things, don't get stuck doing the same discipline push your comfort boundaries and you will improve. Above all enjoy it, otherwise what's the point.

Regards to all Simon
