I have been using my D90 for a little bit more than a year. when they sold me the camera, they said I had to calibrate it once a year. Is it something that needs to be done ? I am afraid to send the camera and I would definitely prefer not to.
Is there a way to do the "calibration" by yourself ?

Never heard of such a requirement for any DSLR. I own a D90 & a D5000.

Sounds like a shop trying to get you back for unnecessary services and charges. No "recalibration" is regularly necessary. Cleaning and adjusting maybe, but you should know when this might be necessary.

To calibrate anything is to check and make sure everything is up to factory set spec's.
The only thing I've had calibrated is weight scales and micrometers. So unless you've been drop kicking your camera back to the car after a shoot....Tell them where to get off.
Money grubbing fools.

When my wife bought new tires, the dealer said to bring them back in six months to have the composition of the rubber checked. He would change the air in the tires for free.

There is a way of calibrating a profile for improving the color fidelity your camera produces. The X rite Passport is a color target that you use for this purpose. By creating a proper profile that is applied to your camera files it improves the fidelity and color space of your camera. The reality is that you are not really calibrating your camera, you are creating a profile that corrects your camera output and improves the color. Go to the X Rite site and look at the X Rite Passport and it explains the process. If you want the best that can be produced the camera has to be "calibrated". All digital cameras only have the color that is supplied by the manufacturer, there is no industry standard when it comes to good color, its what each company installs in the cameras. I am sure that you have heard that Nikon images are warmer. This is a result of there not being a standard that all camera manufacturers comply to. There fore it is up to the consumer to do there own calibrating and that is what the X Rite Passport does. There are several ways to "calibrate" a camera this is only one of them. Photoshop has a camera calibration system also. Most people are satisfied with the default color a camera produces but if you want the best color output the manufacturers default is not enough.

Air rotated?! Oh, come on now. You didn't fall for that one, did you? You replace the air every six months, but you never rotate it from tire to tire. That makes no sense at all!

Did you replace the summer air with winter air in your tires there is a slight fee for it .

I change my air twice a year. Summer air goes into them in the Spring for a comfy ride, and winter air goes into them in the fall for its anti freeze properties.

This is what I like about this site. People have and share a lot of knowledge and talent. But they also joke around, and have a good time doing both!

On a serious note, a local tire dealer has been putting nitrogen into tires - for a price. Yes, I know it is better than the air that keeps us alive, but I'm not about to pay to have the air in my tires changed.
