My wife, Erika, began hiking the Appalachian Trail in March as many of you know. Her intent was to go all the way to Maine. That would have been a distance of over two thousand miles. After six hundred and thirty one miles, she decided that it was not fun any more. Her arthritis was bothering her, her hiking partner had injured his knees and would have to stop hiking, and I think she really missed home. She could have continued without her hiking partner; but decided that she would rather come home. I drove down to Virginia to pick her up yesterday. I posted some of her earlier photos when I visited her in Gatlinburg. These are all photos she took with my AW100 point and shoot. I touched some of the photos up in lightroom; but I wanted to keep them as close to original as possible since they are her photos not mine. Hope you like them. I'm terribly proud of her for her accomplishment. I also think she could be a good photographer.
I hope Erika knows that she has accomplished a lot - 630 miles is a great distance and she should be congratulated. Loved her pictures from the trail too.

Very nice, ebrunner. I'm sorry your wife called a halt to her hike, but doing the entire Appalachian Trail is not a trivial exercise! I have two friends who also chose to do this (quit jobs, sold cars, etc.) and ended up calling it quits after a while.
I live in Virginia, about an hour from the Trail. It's quite a scenic (photogenic) trail, as is the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive. I sometimes forget how scenic (and historic) Virginia is. Thanks for the reminder!
And welcome home to your wife!
Beautiful pictures!! She is wise to stop after accomplishing a magnificent feat!

Thank you for your kind words. Yes, she is aware of what she has accomplished which is why she had no regrets when she decided to come home. I appreciate your compliments. I like the photos too.

You are quite right. Virginia is beautiful and full of history. She really enjoyed her time on the trail; but decided it was time to come home. I certainly would have supporter her if she wanted to continue; but she gave it her best and I don't know too many people who have hiked over six hundred miles in one go. I'm very proud of her.
