I absolutely love my Canon Rebel T3i i got for Christmas........ the lens it comes with is "ok" but It doesn't have the zoom I would love to have..... any suggestions on an affordable lens for a first time lens purchaser???? I just changed from point and shoot to DSL..... I look at a lot on line but don't have the knowledge to find what I am looking for. I would like for it to be versatile enough that I can keep it on the camera most of the time.... if that makes sense..... and I really don't want one that is really big and bulky.... I would appreciate some help from this group......... I read this every day ...... I save all of the e-mails because I find out super good info every day. Thanks
Hard to recommend anything since you don't say what lenses you have right now.

I have the Tamron 18-270. Love that lens. I keep it on all the time unless I need another lens.
comes with an 18_55mm lens.

In that case the Canon 55-250mm zoom EFS should make a great second lens and its quite reasonably priced too.
Just did some research on this lens and it sounds like what I am looking for .... and the price is reasonable. Thanks a million.....
MT Shooter - I just checked out the pics on your website.... They are great.... Especially the rock balancing in the water, the awesome tree, and the barn........... They are all really nice ............

Thank you. That boulder in the river actually fell down about 20 years ago. And the barn has been gone for 25. Those were some of my old film shots that I scanned from the negatives.
Hope the lens works for you.

I just purchased the Canon 60D & I got the Canon 18-135mm IS lens. It's list is about $500. I love it, and it's the only lens I have. Works great.
I have a Sigma 18 X 250 for my Canon XSi that I have owned for about 2 years. I have been very satisfied with it. Price at B&H is $479. Also a Tamron 18 X 270 would probably be a good choice but would cost a little more. Either of these are a good all purpose lens and will serve you well. However, if you shoot a lot of sport events, you might want something faster, which in turn will cost a lot more.

I second this suggestion.
I would not purchase the 55-250 lens. I bought one from Amazon on a Gold box deal for $149 in November. I thought for that kind of money how bad could it be. The pictures were okay but at the far end of the zoom they were unacceptable to me for moving subjects. So it went back. I am planning to purchase the 70-300is currently 464 on Amz later this month. If you plan to take wildlife or sporting event photos. You may want to step up to the 70-300is. I shoot a T2i and have the 15-85is zoom as my everyday lens. I shoot macro with my 50mm f2.5 and life size converter.

Hi Hey You:
Congrats on your camera ! :-) You'll have lots of fun with it. Kit lenses are usually OK to start with - but you'll definitely get enjoyment out of better glass. Use the lens your camera came with to get oriented to the camera - then decide what you'd most like to capture and save up for some good glass. Your lenses will become an investment far more than your camera body will be.
.
I have a reasonable quality Canon 'super-zoom' covering 18 - 200mm (Tamron and Sigma make similar) which I take with me on vacations. It'll cover 85% of anything you might want to do WITHOUT having to do a lens change.
.
I also have a wide angle (Tokina 12-24), and a good quality zoom (Canon's 70-200 f/4L non-IS). Also a smattering of others, but the 3 mentioned seem to get the most use. Got a Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro for Christmas - THAT is my best glass, and is a lot of fun - but is also a Niche lens.
.
Most of all - shoot, shoot, shoot and enjoy. Welcome to UHH.
