A photographically challenged friend is asking me to purchase a good point and shoot for them and try and get them the most bang for the buck.
They don't want a DSLR as it seems to complicated for them.
SLR cameras is all I have and use Nikons, Olympus and an old Pentax film camera.
I am totally unfamiliar with desirable features on today's point and shoot cameras.
Can anyone offer suggestions as to brands and models that might make my friend happy in around the $200 - $300 price range.
Thanks ever so much in advance.
John
If I were in the market, I'd buy
this one. Great reviews, easy to use.

Thank you Carioca. It seems to have a great deal of nice features for as little of $200 on Amazon.
That may be the one for them.
Thanks,
John
I would look at the Panasonic Lumix line but, and it's a big one - there are several good ones to choose from with so many different options in so many price ranges. Much like looking at a bin of apples to pick out the best one without defining "best" or good .

I've had a p&s Kodak for a couple years and was/is a good camera, but, as with P&S's out in bright sunlight you cannot see the image on the screen.... At all....
Sooo, I just purchased last week a Canon Power Shot A1200 model WITH A VIEWFINDER.... Still use the screen, but outside the viewfinder saves your picture because you can SEE what you shoot... Now mind you, its not the biggest viewfinder, but its works...
Got mine on Ebay... Normally, they sell for about 150 bucks and up, but this one dealer had one for $80 in the box, brand new and unopen AND with a 4gp memory card... Oh,its 12.1 mp.... I really like it and recommend it...

My first digital camera was a Canon Power Shot Digital Elph, a 10 mega pixel which took some really fine images (I still have it
and use it occasionally)I bought it mostly to take pictures while
fly fishing because of it's small size and light weight and it fit under my wader tops nicely.
Canon still makes this line of Power Shot Digital Elph cameras
but with larger sensors and different model numbers.
I suggest doing a Google search and see what these cameras are selling for on Amazon and you can get more info about them at the same time.
John, Some of my best shots were with my Kodak Easy Share DX7630... talk about easy to use.. except the daylight shots - true - can't see the screen... So ever budget minded - I purchased a Fujifilm Finepix S - I love its viewfinder.... and it takes great shots too....
canon has a good p&s camera A3300 around 110.00 16x + 5x zoom it has alot bang for the buck....oh this is {new}

I had one too, I enjoyed it but after newer models evolved I found it to be just too slow to focus
Yes, I do find it slow to focus, but, being raised with an "old school" photographer, I am used to waiting for things to snap into place. My subjects aren't usually moving unless I'm at the rodeo... !

I have a friend who takes great pictures with his Canon Powershot G11. See his pictures at

Higher in price, but lots more potential is the Canon G12. My wife uses it as a point and shoot, but it allows me to do more creative things as well.
I bought the Canon Powershot s100 for my wife which takes fantastic photos and video as a compact point and shoot and gives great manual options for me as well. The s100 is a little higher than the price range but the previous version s90 is very similar and is in that price range.
She wanted a true compact, otherwise may have gone with the Panasonic Lumix. They also have great image quality.

I have gotten some terrific pictures with my Canon Power Shot SX30 IS with the 35X optical zoom on it. It is easy to use and in your friend's price range.
