Need help figuring out a slave problem

I recently bought a Nikon D5100 and a Yongnuo 565ex (the newer model that is TTL capable) and I also picked up an older Nikon SB-20. The 565ex works fine (as far as I can tell) when it's on the camera... all the TTL information shows up on the display screen.

My problem is I have never used any of the three pieces in slave mode and can't seem to get either the 565 or the SB -20 to fire. I've set the 5100 to flash TTL mode (which I believe is the right setting and not Manual) and the Sb-20 should respond to that setting (the sb20 does have 3 settings A, M, and TTL but I believe that is only when used on camera with the older SLRs.

The settings on the 565 are a bit more complicated, but I've got it set on TTL, slave mode, c 1, g a (which seems to be the first default setting) even though the 5100 does not do command modes, so I assumed that at that setting the flash should slave. Neither manual is quite clear on this subject.

One thought is what "command dial" settings would the slave work or not work?

You have to have a flash in "command" mode to fire the flash that is in the slave mode. I don't believe that the flash on the 5100 camera has that capability. You can use "triggers" to do this. There are many models to choose from.

Damn... I watched as many youtube videos as I could find and thought it would do it... ah well. At least it's full TTL for only $104 dollars and build quality is great... LCD screen is a bit difficult to read but other than that. And I only paid $15 dollars for the sb20.

any suggestions on a good less expensive model of triggering system?

phottix makes a decent, inexpensive one. The one I have was $50.00 for a commander and slave. Extra slaves were $20.00 each. They do work well. there are a lot of others too, some are quite expensive. Let me know what you decide.

thanks, I'll check that one out... and yes, pennies count when you're on a teeny tinny pension, that is if you want to buy food and/or gas... lol

Wrong.
That's ONLY if you were trying to use a Nikon Speedlite in 'Remote' using the CLS (Creative Light System).

The 565 must be in S2 mode if you're using TTL on the D5100.
That means it will ignore the 'pre-flash' that the 5100 will do to guage the exposure and limit red-eye. Better to do Manual flash on the D5100, set as low as you can, and set the 565 to S1 mode.

The SB20 will require a separate optical slave trigger.

Awesome... got it!!! Thank you... lol... been trying for 2 days to get it to work, but since there is no good printed sequence of the menu buttons I was not getting to the S2 position.

Are you sure? I saw it has an electronic eye on the front and there was a youtube video somewhere that showed it triggering with just a flash, which is why I purchased it in the first place (besides the price)

the adapter you posted the link to says it's for Sony flashes, will it work on Nikon also?

The Yongnuo YN-622n, the n is for Nikon, the c is for the canon. They cost about 40.00 each, you will need at least two, one on top of your camera and one a the flash.
