There's a story behind this shot of a Gannet in flight

I took Mrs Wonky on a special day out (somewhere I could take lots of photos while she just stood about), anyway I set the Nikon P520 to auto for her and said enjoy.
After about 15 minutes she stuffed the camera back in my bag and muttered something along the lines of "it won't focus on what I want and by the time it does and I press the shutter the birds have moved, and the view through the viewfinder is all blurred (which I complain about all the time).
The Gannet is the white splodge in the background but what she actually ended up with I quite like.
