indoor lighting

hello all,is it better to shoot in program mode when shooting a birthday party indoors to ensure the best photos possible.I feel like whenever i shoot in manual an try to control the lighting myself i end up with very yellow looking pics,can someone please help me with this?

The yellow is probably your white balance - you may have it set for sunlight/cloudy and are shooting in tungsten (incandescent) lighting. Shoot raw or use auto white balance and tweak it with an editor.
As far as exposure control, if you don't have time to set everything when shooting, just go between aperture and shutter priority - at least that gives you a little control.

SWhen shooting parties and other indoor events I just about never have it on manual focus, because it is too slow. y the time you have the focus the moment is gone.
I keep the camera on shutter speed priority set to 1/160. That is slow enough to avoid bad digital noise, but fast enough to avoid blurring random gestures people make with their hands.
Lighting usually varies from bad to worse. I deal with this through exposure compensation and ISO. Moreover, the lighting varies from one part of the facility/room, etc. This necessitates frequent checking and adjusting throughout the shoot.
I generally avoid flash, except for bouncing it off the ceiling, because, unless there is a very plain background behind your shot, the flash will give you nasty shadows that are difficult to remove.
Finally, take a large number of shots. You can throw away the ones that are composed or exposed badly, and give only the good ones to the client.

You will need to set a custom white balance to do away with the yellow tint. I personally prefer to shot in manual, mostly because I have no clue how the program modes work, lol.

mwac to the rescue,well party is over and i didnt even bring my camera along too many things to carry as it is.how do i do a custom white balance?

You shot with a Nikon DSLR right?
I'm a Canon girl, so I'm not sure how to set your custom white balance, I believe it should be in your camera menu but unsure where. I'm sure a Nikon person can answer that question.

i got my first canon rebel film slr when i was 18 and i still love it 13 years later,my husband bought me the nikon dslr last year

i guess its a good idea to read this d3100 for dummies there is so much about my camera that i do not know how to do,and a lot of info is not even in the manual.

I have a canon rebel film slr as well, my MIL gave it to me for christmas 2 years ago (along with a shoe box full of film). I love that little camera.
Yes read the book, you'll be like "What my camera does that???"
