Strange Message

Went on a photo shoot yesterday. Rainy, damp, 50 degrees and windy. I have a Nikon D3100 with a Vello BG-N5 battery grip. After about 10 minutes or so I got a message something to the effect of "not correct battery, insert correct battery for this camera." I turned the camera off a couple of times and took batteries out,re-inserted and everything was Ok for 5 minutes or so and same thing happened. Took the battery grip off and put the battery in the camera and shot the rest of the day with no problems. When i got home I re-installed the battery grip and everything seems to be fine. Anyone have an idea of what happened? Thanks....John

Poltergeist most likely.

Could be a combination of weather conditions and a non-Nikon battery grip. Try cleaning the contacts also.

Two possibilities:

Are you using an original Nikon Battery? The 3100 requires a chipped Nikon battery. If you're using a 3rd party battery, that could be the cause. The 3rd party battery may work fine, but you're going to be nagged by that error for eternity. Look for the fancy gold sticker on the battery to confirm authenticity.

Second, Lithium batteries can get messed up if left in freezing temps for too long. Has you battery been exposed to such conditions?

Otherwise, if neither of the above are the issue, if your camera is still under warranty, you can send the battery back to Nikon for a replacement.

Thanks for the replies. Nikon batteries fairly new, never been in weather colder than 50-60 degrees. Contacts look fine, no corrosion. My personal opinion is for some reason it was the wet weather. I have never shot in these conditions before.

I had exactly the same issue with my d5100. I found that if the screw holding the battery grip is even the slightest bit loose, you'll get that message. If it happens again, turn the camera off, secure the grip and turn the camera back on. You should be ok after that.

Did the camera get wet? I hope not since most consumer model camera bodies are not weather proof.
