I have a giant debate taking place in my head and thought your input might help. I will be traveling to New York and staying at West Point (Wounded Warrior) athletic event and we will also be visiting the 911 Museum.
The problem:
I am trying to decide which camera to take along. I have a Canon 6D, Panasonic Lumix GF2 and a Nikon S9500...large, medium and small.
I'm sure you see my problem. I'm trying to determine if I should lug the 6d and a 50mm f1.4 and be nervous, or using one of the smaller units and sacrificing the quality that I have become so fond of.
Any thoughts?

I'd definitely take the 6D. West Point is beautiful. Rather be safe than sorry.

Do you have a wide-angle lens? This would be a trip for that! The cemetery at West Point is nice. While visiting my cousin's grave I go by and visit General Custer's Monument - not necessarily to pay respect to the megalomaniac, but to admire the awesome Beech tree that stands over it.

And 0h - BTW - try not to drip too many salty tears on your equipment. I hear the 911 museum is very moving - how could it not be?

Welcome to the Hog!
Walking around with a point and shoot in your pocket in case a photo op arises is one thing, but going on a trip where you are planning to take numerous photos is another. Take the most capable camera you have, which in this case would be the 6D. What is stopping you from also taking your small camera along for those moments when you don't feel like carrying the big one?

Welcome to our forum!

I'm sure you'll have room for more than one camera, so bring the big Canon. You can stroll the grounds without being nervous and take your time to get good shots.

You can also bring a pocket camera for when the big one wouldn't be appropriate.

The hotel is a beautiful old place, and they have (or used to have) or used to have a fantastic brunch. I think it's only on sunday, though.

I shoot Nikon, and have an old 35-80mm lens that provides a nice range of zoom. You might consider picking up something like this which would be fairly small.

check with west point regarding access... before 911 you could drive in and have easy access to the whole place, except flirtation walk and barracks area.

after 911 they allowed access only through guided tours arranged at the visitors center right outside the gate, (used to be ladycliff college).

i haven't been back in a while and am told they have relaxed restrictions - it would be worthwhile to check...

Recently hubby bought me a nice Canon Rebel T5i. The other day I gave him our little Canon point and shoot. His comment was "Oh this is for me?" Do you have someone going with you? If you do give that person the little camera.

West Point and all of the Hudson valley is magnificent any time of year, so bring the big gear if you are coming from afar, if you are looking for once in a lifetime photographs. Don't forget "coulda, shoulda, woulda."
I'm a New Yorker. I am in a serious quandry about the museum, but go and form your own opinion. What irks me most is, I understand there is a museum "gift shop". I simply do NOT understand how a museum could have a gift shop after what really is a museum about the most deadly domestic or international invasion this nation has ever suffered. Now, I have not fully investigated where the proceeds of this go, so perhaps there is justification for it. Is there a gift shop at the Pearl Harbor Memorial in Hawaii? I don't know. It all seems so crass, in my opinion.
But I do welcome you to New York, and truly hope you enjoy our city, and the Hudson valley.

Hunakai, I agree. I will be attending a special event there introducing the museum to many members of the Wounded Warriors. This date holds an emotional meaning to all of those that enlisted in the military because of the events that took place that day. I understand your point, and agree. But, to the people that were affected by "911", they are not attending to buy souvenirs, but to honor their fallen family, friends and the people they fought along side of in the name of the Freedom. If the museum gets government funding, then selling these items becomes insignificant. I believe this museum should be there for all Americans to be proud of, and so that we never forget this very black day in our history. I have been honored to be a part of this program as a volunteer. Though I get a small stipend for my time, I basically donate my time, and would gladly be there on my dime. Healing should be the "right" of all of us, even though most of us did not suffer how these young men and women have. I am not attending to bring home a trinket, but to honor every American that has given legs, arms, lives and other unseen afflictions and must live with that the rest of their lives. Thanks for your reply.
Do you remember (I'm sure you do) where you were nd what you were doing on that day?
