An interview with Hoops12751,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have always loved photography, but really started taking it seriously three years ago.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have attended several photo expeditions that included workshops, photo reviews, and extensive field work with various other photographers. I enjoy landscape photography the most because it gives me a reason to travel and experience places in a whole new way.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
I am always drawn to a burst of color, but I also like an image that makes me think about how it was captured - because there is a story behind every great image.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
For this image, I was using my Canon 6D, Tamron 28 to 300mm lens and a tripod because the exposure was about 20 seconds. You can literally get by the Ohio River's edge underneath this bridge looking across to the Cincinnati skyline. The tungsten lighting on the bridge really makes it stand out and if you get the right light at sunset, you are set.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I do a minimal amount of post in Lightroom 5, but always strive to get it right in camera. I usually shoot two-thirds of a stop underexposed and use cloudy as my "go to" white balance setting.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
My wife's aunt was the first female president of the PP of A, and her grandfather before that, so we have a great history with the profession.
I have always loved the wonderful architecture of Cincinnati and just waited for the right moment.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
Wouldn't change anything, because every mistake I have made has been a great lesson.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
I wish I had understood the relationship between aperture, ISO, and shutter speed so I could have started using manual mode earlier.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
With out a doubt, my Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod, because my favorite time to shoot after the sun goes down.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
My "go to" lens has been the Tamron 28-300 because it is versatile and allows me to capture a variety of images without having to constantly change lenses.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I carry a Canon Speedlite 430EX II in my bag, but rarely use it.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I'd be a travel writer.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
I was in Philadelphia last August and wanted to capture City Hall from the Museum of Art looking down Ben Franklin Parkway at sunset. I arrive to the location and the steps are filled with dozens of photographers and enough gear to make one envious. I set up and waited for the light to get right and suddenly I look around and everyone but me had left! I thought to myself that either I am totally stupid and everyone else knows something I don't or they were all going to miss the real show. Turns out, all of that fancy gear they had missed the best time of day to capture that wonderful city.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I am in the process of setting up my website, so it will be done soon.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
"Don't be afraid to fail!" I shot over 50,000 images last year just so I could get better. "All success is built on failure."
