Pentax K-500 vs ???
My current camera is a Canon S95. Takes good pictures, but I'm ready to move up to a DSLR. I don't shoot sports or much low-light situations. Mostly people, scenery, touristy stuff, etc. The Pentax K-500 interests me, especially since you can now get a 2-lens package for about $500. I would probably want to add a prime lens in the future.
I've looked at m4/3, but prefer something a bit larger. Alas, there are no Pentax dealers in my area, so I can't put my hands on one. I'd like to know other member's experience with this specific camera, or the similar K-50, or any other of the current Pentax offerings. Overall satisfaction, mostly, given that the K-500 is considered an entry level camera. Your comments are appreciated.
My first DSLR was a Pentax K10. Loved it, and still do- tough as old boots, user friendly, just, well, nice.
But, the main issue is lack of availability of decent glass- at least in the UK. For that reason I'd always recommend a new buyer goes for Canon or Nikon, but do look again at micro4/3. If you've big hands try Panasonic's larger models, such as G6.
These will push your budget, but unless you're certain that the Pentax offer will meet your future needs, may be cheaper in the long run.
Either way, good luck and enjoy yourself.
Thanks, Jackdoor. I'm probably putting too much emphasis on price. Since I'm starting from scratch and have no Pentax glass or other useable accessories to consider, your advice is well-taken. Thanks.
I have and still own Pentax IstD, K10, K20 and now the K3. The K3 is a very competent system and I am very satisfied with it.
Thanks, jackglisson. Were you able to purchase the K3 from a local store or did you have to buy "sight unseen" from B&H or any of the other online sources?
I own a K-30 and consider it better performing and less expensive than similar Nikon bodies. How much glass you need is of course, up to you, but 1 or 2 to start with will show the Pentax's fine results.
I actually bought mine mail order before it was available locally. I had a trip planned and did not want to wait for it.

I have a K-10 and a K-5. The K-5 gives me many options for color and mono and the noise is minimal up to 3200 ISO. I am very satisfied with Pentax and lens are less expensive then the other brands. The K-3 will be my next camera if and when my K-5 "dies".
I have owned 4 Pentax cameras the KM, K30, K5, now the K3. Oh wait I also have the K01, the Q and a WG2, I guess you could say I'm a Pentaxian all the way.
Thank you, Northmaple, A10, Masonken52 and, again, Jackglisson. Your input is really appreciated! I'm getting closer to pulling the Pentax trigger.
I have a Pentax k-r .I mess
up the computer part of it . my FAULT! I had it repaired at the Pentax service center in Chandler,AZ. it was little out of warranty
I had fixed at no cost. Why i Brought it ,to use AA Batteries to supply power with out pistol grip. The AA battery holder is an opinion .also stabilizer for the lenses is built in to the camera instead of the lenses of Canon and Nikon. The second option is a lense adapter for older screw type for older Pentax lenses. later on you can up grade to the K3 and use the lenses form the camera you have. I do not know if 4/3 camera lenses are K3 type
Thanks for your comments, legacyguy12. Beautiful sunset shot!
