GPS on my camera

This is my first post, although I have read the forum daily for several months. I am strictly amateur in photography and enjoy my cameras for family and travel. I started with a Voigtlander Bessamatic which I received as a college graduation gift in 1960. So you see I'm no youngster.
Question: I have a Sony A65 with a Sigma 18 - 250mm lense. Recently I read that I could convert the data from GPS function and show the location shere I took the picture on Google maps. How do I do that? I am somewhat technically challenged.

Hi George, if your GPS is enabled when you take a photograph the coordinates are recorded to the Exif data, then you will need the PP software to show the position on Google Maps.
I use Zoner Photo Studio for this but you can also use PSE 11 or 12. On ZPS you simply click on the "Map" tab and Google Maps will show where the shot was taken. On PSE the process is similar but it is not as easy as ZPS.
One thing to mention is that the GPS function on your camera shortens the battery life. Try ZPS free for 30 days and see how you get on:http://free.zoner.com/
I hope this helps,
John.

If you are saying your camera has a built in GPS, then I need to ask What do you use for PP software? Lightroom for instance can do this out of the box.

If your camera does not have built in GPS, then you have a few options, put a GPS app on your Smart phone, you need one that can export your track. Then depending on your PP software, they can be imported, but the clocks on your phone / camera must be close to the same.

Or you can buy a GPS for your camera. Option #1 is much cheaper.

Lightroom and Picasa will pick up the GPS info from the metadata and automatically place the image into Google maps. They can be seen by viewing Google maps from within the software. Many other imaging/editing software packages also do this. the screen shot is from Lightroom Mapping.

The flags indicate the number of photos at that location, clicking on the flags reveal thumbnails.

Be careful with this. If you take photos of Children, and post them on social media or elsewhere. The files can be downloaded and the GPS co-ordinates taken and they know exactly where that child has been, and possibly even their home location. For child photographs, you are better off shutting off that information.

I second David Kay's warning. No point taking chances. I have given the same advice to my kids about posting images of my grandkids.

Thank you to all of you. In reply to some of your responses. GPS is buit in to my Sony A65. My PP software is Photoshop Elements 12. Am I able to use the GPS with PSE 12? I appreciate the words of caution regarding announcing my or grandchildrens' location.

Hello George and welcome to this forum!

If I might make a suggestion; check this out:

http://friedmanarchives.com/alpha77/

This is the DEFINATIVE book on the Sony A65/A77 written by one of the BEST authors in the business.

It is EXCELLENT, and will give you in GREAT but easy to understand detail, all the information you will ever need about EVERY feature and function of your camera.

It is an EXCELLENT book that describes how to do all the things you will want to do with that extremely powerful camera of yours.

Check it out... you won't be sorry. ;)

Is there any way I can do the same with Photoshop Elements 12? I got rid of Picasa when I got PSE12.

In PSE 12 go to the Organiser and choose Places. It seems to work a little differently to what I am used to, but it is definitely there.
