A friend of mine is looking for a good "point and shoot" camera. I was going to recommend the Nikon Coolpix S9700 ($319) for her. Any other suggestions in this price range that might be better. I like the specs and the incredible zoom of this one. Don't know a lot about it other than what I read. She will mainly be shooting grandkids, flowers and general photography.

Most of the small point and shoot cameras offered these days are capable of incredible images. The problem I have had with one of the older Coolpix cameras is the shutter is so slow that when my nieces and nephews were running across in front of me by the time the shutter went off they were already out of the picture. For stationary photos they are great. I say this not ever buying another one after the last one did so miserably for MY needs. That was my only complaint.

Take her into the shop and try two or three. Its digital, costs nothing to try. remember p&s have fiddly menu's so if you are shooting different things regularly it can get a bit iffy trying to find the settings. try a 2nd hand compact camera in that budget it may have easier (or bigger) controls.

Go for either the Canon G15 which has VERY low shutter lag. Or the Nikon P7800, equally fast focusing shutter lag (Both are way better than most other P&S) but with a few more features. Both of these have many features she probably won't use much, but they also both do great video (I didn't pay attention to this until it proved handy to shoot my grand daughter's first steps, my parrot's antics, etc.) I have the G15 as my "carry it in the car just in case" camera, but that is last year's model. Today I would probably go with the P7800.
