If anyone here has had your camera in to Nikon service recently(like my D600)Nikon has already done this update for you.
Check your Firmware version in the SETUP Menu. The "L" (for Lens) Version will be 1.009 for the latest version.
If you have the 1.009 version the update is un-necessary.

I don't quite understand what this update will do. Is it for Windows? Is it for installation into my D7100?

Click on the link provided. Go ALL the way down to the bottom of the HTML page (below the list of lenses). There is a link that details the installation instructions. This Firmware loads onto your camera via the memory card.
