Changing the f-stop affects your flash exposure as well.
Using the highest flash sync speed (which I think is 1/200th on her camera) will be better for killing the ambient lighting.
You would want to keep the aperture somewhere around 8~11. Using manual power on both, change the power setting on the on-camera flash and monolight to get the proper exposure.
The reason for using that aperture is twofold:
You want enough depth of field to cover the subjects.
You don't want a smaler aperture than that unless you want to go through a lot of batteries because you'll need more power.
sometimes school hallway lighting is in sections so maybe your section can be turned off without too much trouble? you still have enough light in your shooting area so that they can walk to and get seated safely
