Sorry if I offended anyone by not posting feedback and I'm ok with a good ol' thread hijacking. I appreciate all of the input and its given me lots to think about.
My real job and my camera searching job are sucking the life out of me.
That being said I went to my local camera store and did a touchy feely with Nikon and Sony as I am familiar with the Canon. I rented a Nikon 610 for a couple of days to play with it and see about the controls. The controls were a little tough. In Canon world I can do a lot of things one handed as I can press a function button once- ISO for instance- and make adjustments while not holding the button down- that's a plus for me- Any way around that on a Nikon?Does that offset any perceived IQ? The grip didn't feel as good on a Nikon but not something I couldn't get used to
As of now I'm off of the FF bandwagon due to pricing- I'd rather out more money into glass. So going back and forth between Canon and Nikon at this point(70D vs 7100) looking at lenses for both- pricing and type between each brand as I look at the overall system. Still debating whether to consider my 30D "dead" or incorporate it into what I'm doing

THanks again all

To add to this even though my rental camera came with a manual I purposefully tried to figure out the controls without the manual to see how intuitive they were(or how dumb/smart I am :) )
It wasn't too bad to figure out so I'm sure I could get used to it quickly- just more worried about the need for 2 hands/multiple fingers to hold down buttons

RT, someone had called 911, as we thought you had stopped breathing!! good to see you back.
Hey, if budget is an issue, I'd also look at a used 7d. They are about the same as a 7100, sports-wise, but you can find them at less than $700. That camera is still and action monster, and always will be. Leaves you a lot of room for lenses. Take a good look at it. And any lens you have will work on it.
Yes, you'd been hijacked, but some of these guys are soooo out of control, their wives won't let them in, and even their dogs will bolt their doors and leave'm standing in the rain !!

Hahahahaha! Great call on the 7D. The rest is just plain hilarious!

The whole wife thing never ceases to amuse me because I don't get that.

Thanks SS.
I'm glad that I asked 'cause that's what I was thinking from what I had been reading from the Pop Photo and Outdoor Photography Mags so at least my judgement was good then. Don't know when it's ever going to be able to happen but I hope it will someday. I have been able to get great shots of the Pileated's with the Olympus C-740 and the attachment I got for it locally that wasn't "specifically" an Olympus attachment but I'm not happy with what I am getting with the birds in flight so I know I need something better for shutter speed. Also when looking at the attachments they do have for the Canon's I know I could get much better from a distance of the Pileated's and if ever I went up to the Skagit of the Bald Eagles. I've prob. been up there about 3 times on day birding trips. Once prob. after getting the attachment on the camera. For sure can tell the difference it made with getting better shots of the eagles between the first time and that time. Same with the Gr. Blue Heron.

Good to see you back! You already have some lenses to fit Canon so why change? Another thing to consider is third party lenses. Sigma has made some very good glass the last couple of years. SS suggestion about looking at a used 7D is an excellent one. It is a great all around camera and not many can beat it for sports and nature photography! Sense the introduction of the 70D and rumors of a new 7D prices have really dropped, and any lenses you have for your 30D will fit it.

$749.00 for E+ condition, wish I had paid that for mine.
