this is a reminder to all that you should keep an eye on your surroundings and not just concentrate on what your shooting

Up in the north woods of Wisconsin I stopped the truck on a forest fire road to get a picture of some ducks when I hear a sound to my right less than 50 yrd away I was surprised to see a Big Mama Black Bear and 2 cubs and me half way between them and my truck ! sorry the pic quality is a little grainy

They must have been there when I got out of the truck and walk towards them not watching where I was going to .Just the swamp to my left and right for "the" shot

Wow, were you lucky she didn't attack! I would have been in shear panic mode.

Yes could have been ugly and there is not a lot of traffic on the fire roads especially on a Monday

Wow, a good warning indeed. Glad to hear no photographer was harmed while snapping this amazing scene :)

Good shots! Under the circumstances! You got lucky, in more ways then one! At least you didn't find yourself halfway between the mother and her cubs! I wouldn't want to see those pictures!
I can picture myself doing exactly what you did. Thanks for the reminder!

I would have switched to video so that my family would know what happened

The fact you saw them and had a camera with you is the bonus. I was on a forest service road a few years ago and saw a Mountain Lion.... of course I had no camera :-(

Norm, Look at the bright side; at least they weren't half way between you and the truck.

I feel your pain.....bout 7 years ago I took a hike and left my camera in the cabin, while sitting on a rock a small bear walked right by me 15 ft to get a drink from the river than realised I was there and took of running, good thing I looked bigger and uglier. Now when I'm in the woods I usually have 2 cameras, a point and shoot in my pocket for back up and my Canon SX40 (almost have the wife talked into a70D)

I had a similar experience in Winter ,wisconsin. I was only 14 and was gong to "pet' this black bear cub, when my cousin said ,Steve NO! He pointed out the mamma bear and we walked away. If it had been a few years later,I'd had my Canon Ftb with me!

She wouldn't attack unless she felt her cubs were threatened. Very, very few animals attack humans unprovoked.
