Joined a couple of weeks ago, hoping to pick up some good tips about taking photos, etc. Because I am going to be buying a new camera soon, now have a Sony DSC-H5 which has given me pretty good shots (Darn that Lap time tho). I know going with a DSLR is probably the best bet, but I do not care to learn the ins and out at this stage of my life. Mainly want a good zoom...which leads me to my choices at this point. Studying reviews on the Internet, am thinking of the Canon SX30IS or the Nikon P500, mainly for their zoom. Will welcome any tips, idea, pro or con. Am not able to go the SLR route, hoping for some words of wisdom for me.

I have the Canon SX 30 for the same reasons you expressed. I could sing its praises all day long but I do believe that the photos do come out "soft" compared to those from a dSLR. Ok, so maybe that's why the dSLRs cost a thousand bucks more?? LOL I use iPhoto on my iMac to tweak the contrast and sharpness of some of the pictures in PP.
The 35X zoom (804mm equivalent) is "priceless" and combined with the articulating LCD and neck strap (to make my body my own tripod of sorts) I've been able to get otherwise inaccessible shots. My goal is to become a good photographer regardless or in spite of my equipment! What a lofty goal, eh??

I love your pictures. Good choice to go for a "ready to go" solution in choosing the camera. I eventually had to take classes to understand my Nikons.
One friendly advise - the best zoom are your L e g s! Without changing the position, you cannot find the best perspective of an image.

I have the Sony HXV-5 and love it as my camera to go anywhere and shot anything anywhere. I would encourage you to stay with the Sony brand and stronlgy consider their DSLR Alpha camera's. The new one's with the translucent mirror are being rated very high by reviewers.
